Job Tile: Associate General Counsel

Reports To: Chief Legal Officer

Job Type: Full-Time, Monday-Friday

Salary Range: The proposed salary range based on STA’s good faith belief at the time of posting for this position is $275K to $325K annually and is not a guarantee of compensation or salary. The STA family of companies considers several factors when extending job offers, including but not limited to candidates’ key skills, relevant work experience, education/training/certification, job level, and work location. Base salary is only one component of our competitive total rewards package.

Job Summary:

The Assistant General Counsel has a primary focus on direct management of labor relations matters, while also providing support to the Chief Legal Officer, for the company’s locations across the United States and Canada. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, pragmatic, business-minded lawyer with extensive experience in labor relations, as well as general legal counseling and commercial transaction experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for and negotiate initial and renewal labor agreements, including cost modeling, in close collaboration with local business and HR teams.
  • Serve as a direct contact with union leaders.
  • Serve as primary Legal counsel for grievances, unfair labor practice charges, and other employment matters across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Create and provide training on employee relations, and various legal and compliance topics.
  • Assist with company compliance with U.S. and Canada laws.
  • Assist with corporate governance matters, including preparation for board and committee meetings and maintaining corporate minute books and records.
  • Assist with M&A.
  • Work with outside counsel as needed.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of contracts.
  • Provide quality and timely legal advice to various teams across the organization.
  • Support the CLO in connection with other strategic projects and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability in leading and managing all aspects of labor relations.
  • Ability for travel up to 75%
  • Demonstrated contract drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change and prioritize competing business needs.
  • Attend work on a regular and dependable basis.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to comply with all policies and procedures established by company.

Education and Experience:

  • 5-10 years of applicable experience in labor relations, managing a high volume of multi-union, multi-state CBAs.
  • Strong academic background and a J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing in at least one state - if not NJ, then must be eligible to be licensed as In-House Counsel
