Job description

Description
The Machinist supports critical engine-rebuild and overhaul work by machining, inspecting, repairing, and refurbishing large-engine components to manufacturer specifications. This is a hands-on shop role that combines CNC and conventional machining with engine-component work and general production support. The strongest candidate will be comfortable independently setting up and programming machines, reading complex prints and GD&T, working to tight tolerances, and supporting engine teardown and reassembly when needed.
Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate CNC and conventional mills and lathes, including complex setups on 3- and 4-axis equipment
  • Program machine platforms, validate programs, and complete first-part runs without routine assistance
  • Interpret advanced GD&T, technical prints, engine specifications, shop procedures, and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials for machining operations
  • Calculate and set machining factors including speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut
  • Monitor machine operation, identify malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions, and make required adjustments
  • Verify finished work to specification using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision inspection tools
  • Drill, ream, tap, cut, surface, fit, and refurbish engine components within manufacturer tolerances
  • Operate specialty equipment such as seat-and-guide machines and surfacers as required
  • Perform welding and cutting operations including MIG, TIG, plasma, and gas as qualified
  • Support engine disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and reassembly, including cylinder heads, pistons, connecting rods, oil coolers, pumps, and related components
  • Use proper rigging and lifting techniques to load and position workpieces and engine components
  • Maintain machining equipment, tooling, accessories, work areas, and shop housekeeping to required standards
  • Support parts ordering, inventory, packaging, forklift operation, production goals, and other shop activities as needed
  • Train or mentor other personnel on shop equipment and machining practices when appropriate
Must-Have Skills, Experience, and Education
  • At least 5 years of relevant machining, engine-technology, precision-manufacturing, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently set up and operate CNC and conventional mills and lathes
  • Experience with machine programming, complex setups, and dimensional inspection
  • Strong GD&T and print-reading ability
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools including micrometers, calipers, and gauges
  • Ability to machine and inspect parts to specified tolerances and make sound adjustments based on measured results
  • Ability to read and interpret machinery manuals, engine specifications, procedures, and technical data
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license with no restrictions
  • Ability to perform physical shop work including prolonged standing and repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Strong safety awareness, attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to work effectively in a small shop environment
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Trade-school training in Precision Machining, Marine Engineering, Diesel Technology, or a related technical discipline
  • Experience machining or refurbishing large reciprocating-engine components, cylinder heads, connecting rods, pumps, or similar parts
  • Experience with 3- and 4-axis machining, seat-and-guide machines, surfacers, or engine-specific machine tools
  • MIG, TIG, plasma, and gas welding/cutting capability
  • Familiarity with GE Jenbacher, Deutz/MWM, CAT, MAN, or other industrial engine platforms
  • Engine disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and reassembly experience
  • Rigging, crane, hoist, and forklift experience
  • Ability to train or mentor other machinists or shop personnel
  • Basic Windows, Word, and Excel skills for production documentation and reporting
