Job description

Shape how metal joins metal — and how robots make it happen.

As our Welding Process and Automation Engineer (CWI), you’ll spend your days turning complex weld requirements into robust, repeatable production realities. Based onsite in Salt Lake City, UT, you’ll partner with build and electrical teams to design fixtures, tune parameters, validate automated cells, and verify weld quality against stringent codes and customer specs.

A day in the life
  • Start your morning on your time — 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, or 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.
  • Review drawings, specs, and schematics; translate them into process parameters and control logic.
  • Design or refine welding fixtures and tooling; validate fixtures and check gauging on finished parts.
  • Program and configure PLC-controlled systems and machine peripherals; support electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic design decisions.
  • Debug, start up, validate, and commission automated welding equipment with cross-functional teams.
  • Inspect welds, drive corrective actions, and ensure compliance with AWS/ASME codes and customer requirements.

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 40 hours/week
  • Flexible Start Times: 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, or 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
  • Compensation: $50–$60/hour + Optional PTO, Paid Holidays, and Benefits
Travel

Plan for up to 40% travel, including periodic 2–3 day trips to Michigan and Colorado Springs.

What you’ll do
  • Welding Process Development & Support
    • Create and optimize weld parameters for production equipment.
    • Engineer fixtures and tooling; validate fixtures and verify finished-part gauging.
    • Implement process controls and quality checks for automated welding systems.
    • Ensure operations align with industry standards and customer specifications.
  • Automation & Equipment Integration
    • Design and document control systems for automated manufacturing equipment.
    • Support electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system design.
    • Program/configure PLCs and machine peripherals.
    • Coordinate debugging, startup, validation, and commissioning with build/electrical teams.
    • Adhere to customer requirements and internal engineering standards.
  • Quality & Compliance
    • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, schematics, and technical docs.
    • Execute inspection, validation, and continuous improvement for weld quality.
    • Partner with cross-functional teams to resolve welding/manufacturing issues.
    • Maintain compliance with applicable welding codes, standards, and inspection requirements.
What you bring
  • Fluent reading of engineering drawings, blueprints, specs, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Code expertise: AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2, AWS D1.3, AWS D1.6, AWS B2.1, ASME Section IX.
  • Hands-on welding: FCAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG).
  • NDT familiarity: UT, RT, MT, PT, VT; and knowledge of ASNT TC-1A.
Preferred
  • ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification.
  • Background in industrial manufacturing and metal fabrication.
  • Experience with supplier/process/quality audits.
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma knowledge.
  • Exposure to welding automation and automated manufacturing systems.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Welding, Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field; OR
  • Six (6) or more years in welding engineering, welding automation, or advanced manufacturing.
