Consulting Manager
Governments spend billions without knowing what works. This is the role that changes how they decide, not just what they report.
Snapshot
- Location: Washington, DC Metro (Hybrid)
- Engagement: Full-time, direct hire
- Compensation: $115,000 starting
- Benefits: Comprehensive healthcare, flexible vacation, hybrid work, 401(k)
About the Role
We're looking for a highly capable, entrepreneurial Consulting Manager to help public-sector clients shift toward outcomes-focused, evidence-informed grantmaking. You'll work directly with federal agencies, state governments, and other funding bodies to design strategies, guide better investment decisions, and strengthen the systems that support those decisions over time. This role fits someone with strong consulting experience, comfort in complex environments, and the ability to turn analytical insight into practical action. You'll lead engagements day to day with significant autonomy and direct exposure to senior leadership and clients from the start.
What You'll Own
- Lead engagements end to end. Translate client goals around outcomes, evidence, and impact into clear strategic frameworks and actionable recommendations. Manage plans, timelines, and team members to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines, and produce polished, client-ready deliverables.
- Guide the shift. Move public-sector clients through changes to funding strategy, decision-making, and performance management, changing how they make decisions, not just what they report.
- Grow the relationship. Serve as a trusted advisor who anticipates client needs, facilitates working sessions across program, policy, and leadership audiences, and identify opportunities to deepen and expand engagements.
- Build the practice. Contribute to the evolution of the client's public-sector offerings, mentor analysts and data-focused team members, and support proposal development and thought leadership.
What You Bring
- 3 to 6 years in management consulting, professional services, or advisory roles, including non-linear careers that combine consulting with substantive sector experience
- Direct experience with federal agencies, state governments, or public funding bodies, as a consultant or internal staff
- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving, with the ability to move from analysis to action
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills for senior and non-technical audiences
- Experience managing complex projects and client relationships
- Comfort navigating organizational change, ambiguity, and stakeholder dynamics
- An entrepreneurial mindset with a bias toward ownership and execution
Bonus Points
- Experience in or genuine familiarity with the nonprofit, social sector, or philanthropic space
- A track record combining consulting rigor with subject-matter depth in outcomes measurement, evaluation, or evidence-based grantmaking
- Comfort using AI tools in your analytical or client-delivery workflow
