What is the difference between Thermofluids Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectThermofluids EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering; specialization in thermofluidsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; broad engineering background
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, simulation centers, HVAC, aerospace, energy sectorsManufacturing, design, product development across various industries
Industry UsageFocus on fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics applicationsDesign and analysis of mechanical systems, machinery, and devices

Thermofluids Engineers specialize in fluid flow, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, often working in energy, aerospace, or HVAC sectors. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, covering various mechanical systems and product design. Both roles require strong engineering credentials, but Thermofluids Engineers focus more on thermal-fluid applications within the mechanical engineering field.

What does a thermofluids engineer do?

A thermofluids engineer designs and analyzes systems involving heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics, often working on HVAC, energy systems, or aerospace applications. They use computational tools and laboratory testing to optimize performance and ensure safety and efficiency in thermal systems.

Join us in our mission to commercialize fusion energy

About Type One Energy

Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable, affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines, together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies.

If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision, join us as a Senior Thermofluids Engineer. This is what you need to know:

Location: Knoxville, TN

Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits

Contract: Permanent, full time

Reporting to: Thermofluids Engineering Manager

Your role in the mission:

The Senior Thermofluids Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and delivery of thermal fluid systems supporting the Infinity One stellarator and future fusion power plant development efforts. The Senior Engineer is an expert leader of multiple, complex projects and initiatives, often influencing business direction through technical decisions. This role will contribute directly to the development and integration of the plantโ€™s steam generator and associated heat transport systems, applying software-based analysis, simulation, and thermal-hydraulic modeling to guide design decisions across multiple projects. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with internal teams and key engineering partners, including AECOM, to ensure effective integration of thermal-fluid systems within broader plant architectures.

Responsibilities
  • Perform analytical thermodynamic, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer calculations on the machine's core and support systems to support design and performance evaluation.
  • Design and/or specify key components of the system such as piping, pumps, valves, heat exchangers.
  • Develop PFDs / P&IDs and other relevant design documentation for this system.
  • Contribute to steam generator design, sizing, integration, and performance evaluation in collaboration with AECOM and other engineering partners.
  • Set technical strategy for projects and initiatives.
  • Use software tools and simulation methods to provide technical guidance, trade studies, and design support across multiple concurrent thermofluids projects.
What youโ€™ll need:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics calculations.
  • Demonstrated experience with designing and operating water-cooling systems and associated components.
  • Experience performing analytical and numerical analysis of thermal/fluid systems using simulation and property tools such as REFPROP, GASPAK, HePAK, ASPEN HYSYS, or other relevant software.
  • Demonstrated ability to use modelling and simulation results to provide technical guidance across multiple projects and inform system-level engineering decisions.
  • Experience drafting PFD and P&ID.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative engineering environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
  • Masterโ€™s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with steam generators is desired.
  • Experience working on fusion machines is a plus.
  • Experience in system-level modeling, controls integration, and data analysis.
  • Experience with HAZAN, HAZOPS, system commissioning and operation
  • Ability to own and execute on multiple projects.
  • Experience in a fast-paced R&D or startup environment.
We offer

In addition to a basic salary and yearly bonus, you will also getโ€ฆ

  • A hybrid work policy
  • Stock options
