Job description

Function:

The position of System Designer & Estimator involves supporting the Sales and Engineering teams in the design and estimation process. The primary responsibility is translating customers' functional requirements as captured by the Salesperson and RFP documents into bills of materials, quotes and functional narratives that represent a fully functional lighting system. Engineering personnel report to the Engineering Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supports the Engineering, Operations and Installation Teams:
    • Review and interpret functional requirements and site survey information as documented and communicated by the Salesperson.
    • Read and interpret RFP documentation to facilitate providing thoughtful and informed RFI responses and thorough, accurate, and functional proposals.
    • Collaborate with the Salesperson to identify the solution that best meets the clients' needs and budgets, balancing industry standards, best practices, and competitive go-to-market strategies to maximize sales and the quality of the completed installation.
    • Author bills of materials, quotes, and functional narratives that accurately and thoroughly document the proposed solution.
    • Organize bills of materials and functional narratives in a way that ensures legibility to both the client and the CSI Engineering and Operations teams.
    • Use DaVinci System Designer to verify that the proper hardware has been selected for each individual project based on its unique characteristics.
    • Attend design and project kick-off meetings, as well as other project-related meetings as necessary.
    • Advise on and review drawing packages drafted by other engineers for accuracy and to clarify design intent as needed.
    • Authoring change orders for contracted projects as needed.
    • Respond to technical questions from the Operations team as needed according to installation schedules.
  • Supports The Group:
    • Develop and maintain knowledge of current and new technologies the company offers.
    • Maintain relationships with vendors through meetings, educational sessions, and consistent communication.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of technical standards and processes.
    • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager to develop and maintain a consistent continuing education plan.

Skill/Experience Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of performance rigging and scenic systems, including 5 years of design, installation, technical theatrical, or touring/production experience.
  • High proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD and/or Autodesk REVIT and experience in SketchUp.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction documentation, including floor plans, RCPs, building sections, schematics, and riser diagrams.
  • Understanding of bid processes and consultant specification documentation.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet or exceed project-driven deadlines.
  • Ability and desire to work in a team-oriented and interdisciplinary culture.
  • A mentality of constant process improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ownership and use of a smartphone for app-based communication platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, etc.

Skill/Experience Preferences:

  • In-depth knowledge of theatrical rigging systems and hardware
  • Experience in SketchUp
  • Certifications:
    • ETCP Certified Rigger – Theatre
    • ETC Rigging Authorized Service Provider

Physical Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
  • Ability to sit at a computer for an extended period.
  • Light to moderate lifting may be required.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required.
