A Theater Set Design Intern assists the set designer and production team in creating the visual environment for stage performances. Their responsibilities may include researching design concepts, building scale models, sourcing materials, helping construct and paint sets, and attending rehearsals to ensure the set fits the production’s needs. Interns gain hands-on experience in both the creative and technical aspects of set design, often working closely with designers, directors, and other crew members. This role is a valuable opportunity to learn about the process of bringing a stage production to life from behind the scenes.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a theater set design intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Theater Set Design Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of hands-on projects, ranging from creating scale models and drafting set layouts to sourcing materials and helping build or paint set pieces. Interns often collaborate closely with set designers, directors, and technical crews to bring creative concepts to life on stage. You'll likely be involved in attending production meetings, supporting backstage set changes, and learning about the entire design process from concept to execution. This experience provides valuable insight into the collaborative and fast-paced environment typical of theater production teams.
