Job Summary/Description
The Angelo State University Department of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a dynamic theatre educator to join an established and growing theatre program as an Assistant Professor of Theatre. This is a tenure track position beginning Fall 2026.
Successful candidates should have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence, and active career in theatre design, and the ability to design or direct university-level theatrical productions
Typical Duties/Job Duties
  • Teach a two-year rotation of Stagecraft I and II, Fundamentals of Design, Theatre Design I and II, Stage Lighting, Introduction to Costume, Stage Make-Up, Practicum I-IV, and other related courses as assigned by the Director of Theatre and Department Chair.
  • Design and mentor undergraduate student designers for a season of five mainstage productions, working collaboratively with a team of professional educators and students. Provide ongoing instruction and mentorship for undergraduate student designers throughout the academic year.
  • Additional responsibilities include participating in Theatre Program operations, as well as recruiting, retaining, and advising students within the program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The successful applicant will possess strong communication and organizational skills, along with a desire to develop innovative learning experiences. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and uphold high professional standards both inside and outside the classroom.
Applicants should also have:
  • Knowledge of theatre tools and equipment, including strong proficiency with AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or a comparable industry-standard drafting program.
  • Experience in tool and equipment maintenance, replacement planning, and ensuring safety in all technical activities.
  • A willingness to work effectively with a diverse undergraduate student population.

Candidates must show demonstrated expertise in scenic, costume, or lighting design, with at least one additional secondary area of design specialization. Experience in projection design, sound design, or production design for film is also desirable.
Minimum Qualifications
  • An MFA or other terminal degree in Theatre or a related field
  • Demonstrated focus in design and production
  • Experience designing in professional settings

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three to five years of experience teaching theatrical design in higher education.
  • Experience across multiple design areas in both professional and academic settings.
  • Membership in professional theatre unions and associations, such as USA, IATSE, and USITT.
  • A demonstrated history of artistic research at the collegiate level.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to climb a narrow spiral staircase to get to catwalk
  • Ability to work in catwalks as necessary
  • Ability to climb ladders as necessary
  • Ability to stand, kneel, sit as necessary
