GTAW Manual Welder
Department: Operations
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Swagelok Northern California
Reporting To: Production Floor Supervisor
Compensation: $26.20 - $39.30 / hour
Description
The primary responsibility of the Manual Welder is to inspect, build, weld, and test custom-fabricated assemblies using customer-specified products as well as Swagelok products. This role is also responsible for equipment maintenance and upkeep, including identifying the need for and acquiring new equipment as required.
The Manual Welder must demonstrate welding and inspection knowledge sufficient to work from general instructions, shop drawings, fluid system schematics, P&IDs, blueprints, and diagrams. Essential to success in this position is the ability to develop and maintain an extensive knowledge of Swagelok products and services and to effectively communicate that knowledge to others.
The Manual Welder operates welding and inspection equipment within Swagelok Northern California facilities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Read blueprints and/or drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures
  • Determine the appropriate welding program and method based on requirements
  • Operate Inspection equipment according to proper sequence of events to ensure the components are welded according to specifications
  • Align components using calipers, rulers, and other tools as well as clamp pieces
  • Perform visual examination of welds, including the use of a Borescope
  • Make sound decisions, on his/her own, when making needed adjustments
  • Perform to the safety and housekeeping standards in this area, including daily and weekly equipment maintenance
  • Use the necessary controls for weld parameter adjustments
  • Accurately adjust torch, gas lines and fixturing including Internal Purging of SST Tubing
  • Make accurate speed settings
  • Perform the required in-process inspections using knowledge of geometrical tolerancing
  • Use shop geometry and complex gages required for current parts, including use of the comparator
  • Identify the electrode that needs to be changed as needed
  • Change routine tooling
  • Set up and operate weld and Inspection equipment with minimal assistance
  • Clean/Inspect welding equipment accessories
  • Recognize and comply with all applicable Swagelok procedures
  • Understand QN (Quality Notification) paperwork and procedure
  • Use PVD (Primary Visual Display) and schedule boards
  • Understand standard work and workflow

Skills, Competencies, Education, & Work Experience
Skills & Competencies
  • Ability to learn multiple types of welding and test equipment (Swagelok power supplies, Swagelok standard/micro weld heads, dual/single chuck weld lathes, leak detection equipment, bore scope, Comparator, buffing wheels, and appropriate inspection gauges)
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing prints and products
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic shop math - ability to do simple calculations such as stack-ups
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of purging and pressurizing systems
  • Understanding of gauges including calipers, go/ no-go
  • Ability to read and interpret Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) prints is required
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting capability and the ability to work closely with Quality and Engineering functions
  • High attention to detail that is balanced by the ability to meet production demands
  • Regularly communicates and exchanges information with cross-functional stakeholders to support quality and operational requirements
  • Must be able to perform work using computer systems, electronic devices, and on-site business systems
  • Work is performed in office, production, and warehouse environments with noise levels typical of those settings
  • Must be able to accurately inspect products and identify quality defects, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to accurately distinguish color variations in weld pools, heat tint, oxidation levels, and inspection indicators as an essential job function, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to meet company vision standards following a conditional offer of employment. Vision testing is conducted post-offer and, where job-related and consistent with business necessity, periodically during employment
  • Ability to move materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation. Heavier items may be moved using appropriate material handling equipment or team-lifting techniques
  • Must be able to accurately handle products, tools, gauges, and measuring equipment
  • Position may require prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing
  • Must be able to access and navigate manufacturing and warehouse areas to perform essential job functions

Education & Work Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • Five years' experience of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) with Stainless Steel (preferred)
