Job description

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Provides constant supervision and guidance to youth participants in the dorm, during instruction and throughout the city of Chicago. Provides supervision to youth during all activities and transportation to increase independence and remain safe. Provides support and encouragement to all youth. Provides assistance with activities of daily living, as needed.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: This position holds no direct supervisory responsibility.

TRAVEL REQUIRED: Travel is done with the group by foot, bus, train or van.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Participate in a mandatory training on working and interacting with individuals who are blind or visually impaired;
    1. โ€œPerson firstโ€ language
    2. Human guide
    3. Blind etiquette
    4. Overview of Summer in the City Program
    5. Overview of the Lighthouse
  • Provides constant supervision of youth participants;
  • Provides on-the-job instruction regarding all aspects of work assigned at the worksite;
  • Provides all necessary support while traveling by foot, van, bus or train;
  • Provides and promotes social interaction between youth participants;
  • Assists with all meals (eating and table etiquette);
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required;
  • Assists in integrating the youth participant into all aspects of the
  • program;
  • Responsible for adhering to security procedures and taking appropriate measures in case of accident, illness or emergency;
  • Projects professional agency image throughout all environments;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) required; or minimum of 20 college credit hours preferred;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required;
  • Ability to provide supervision constantly throughout the program;
