How much do text prompt engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for text prompt engineering in the United States is $62,977.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $47,000.00 and $72,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Text Prompt Engineers when working with AI models, and how can they be addressed?

Text Prompt Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring prompts yield consistent and accurate responses from AI models and mitigating issues like model bias or ambiguous outputs. To address these, it’s important to iteratively test and refine prompts, collaborate closely with data scientists, and stay updated on model capabilities and limitations. Additionally, documenting prompt strategies and sharing learnings with the team can help streamline future projects and improve overall output quality.

What is text prompt engineering?

Text prompt engineering is the process of designing, refining, and optimizing prompts to guide AI language models, like ChatGPT, towards producing desired outputs. It involves understanding how AI interprets natural language and crafting instructions or queries that elicit specific, accurate, or creative responses. Prompt engineers experiment with phrasing, structure, and context to improve the model's performance on various tasks, such as content generation, summarization, or problem-solving. This emerging field is crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of AI in real-world applications.

What is the difference between Text Prompt Engineering vs Data Scientist?

AspectText Prompt EngineeringData Scientist
Required CredentialsKnowledge of NLP, AI, and prompt design; often self-taught or with specialized coursesDegree in Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields; certifications like CAP or DASCA
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote, focused on AI platforms and language modelsVaries; offices, research labs, or remote, working with data analysis and modeling
Industry UsageUsed in AI development, chatbot design, and NLP applicationsApplied in finance, healthcare, tech, and research for data analysis and predictive modeling

While both roles involve working with data and AI, Text Prompt Engineering focuses on designing effective prompts for language models, whereas Data Scientists analyze data to extract insights and build models. The roles overlap in AI knowledge but differ in their primary tasks and industry applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Text Prompt Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Text Prompt Engineer, you need a strong grasp of natural language processing (NLP), prompt design best practices, and an understanding of AI model behavior, often supported by experience in linguistics or computer science. Familiarity with large language model platforms (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google), version control tools, and prompt evaluation frameworks is common in this role. Exceptional critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills help engineers craft effective prompts and iterate quickly based on model outputs and team feedback. These competencies are crucial for maximizing AI performance, generating accurate results, and delivering real-world value from language models.

Can I become a AI prompt engineer with no experience?

Yes, it is possible to become a prompt engineer without prior experience, especially if you have a strong interest in AI, good problem-solving skills, and are willing to learn about language models and related tools. Building knowledge through online courses, tutorials, and practicing with AI platforms can help you develop the necessary skills for this role. Entry-level positions may require demonstrating your ability to craft effective prompts and understanding AI behavior.

Job description

About Cantina:
Cantina Labs is a social AI company, developing a suite of advanced real-time models that push the boundaries of expression, personality, and realism. We bring characters to life, transforming how people tell stories, connect, and create. We build and power ecosystems. Cantina, our flagship social AI platform, is just the beginning.
If you're excited about the potential AI has to shape human creativity and social interactions, join us in building the future!
About the Role:
As a Prompt Engineer at Cantina Labs, you will operate at the frontier of social generative AI-shaping how millions of users experience storytelling, and connection through AI characters. You'll collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering to discover what makes AI characters engaging, scalable, and hyper-realistic-and translate those insights into prompt systems, datasets, and evaluation frameworks that power Cantina's platform.
This role bridges research and product, pairing rigorous prompt engineering with strategic reasoning about model behavior and user experience. You'll own and shape how bots think, speak, and act across the product's features, balancing immediate product needs with long-term behavioral goals. Your work will directly impact the consistency, expressiveness, and realism of Cantina's AI characters at scale.
What You'll Do:
  • Define and author core behavior system prompts that shape how Cantina bots express personality, emotion, dialect, and social behavior across text, voice, image, and video.
  • Identify key personality traits that make AI personas compelling, and create datasets and prompt structures that reliably reproduce those traits.
  • Prototype new bot traits and product features through prompt engineering and iterate based on qualitative and quantitative evaluation.
  • Balance short-term feature development with long-term behavioral consistency and quality across the Cantina ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with research to build and maintain behavioral evaluations that measure bot performance, personality fidelity, and interaction quality over time.
  • Partner with product, design, and engineering to translate creative intent and user feedback into scalable prompt systems.
  • Review, refine, and evolve prompts as they move into production, helping establish best practices and launch criteria.
  • Track emerging issues in bot behavior, prioritize improvements, and drive prompt-level solutions in ambiguous or high-impact areas.
  • Document model quirks, prompting strategies, and guidelines to scale prompt development across teams.
  • Support research and ML in our training efforts by delivering meta-prompts for our synthetic data pipelines and evaluating new model behavior

What You'll Bring:
  • 3+ years of experience prompt engineering and developing LLM-based features end-to-end.
  • Strong experience writing, testing, and iterating on complex multi-step and system-level prompts.
  • Deep understanding of LLM capabilities, limitations, and quirks, with strong intuition for how input design shapes model behavior.
  • Experience creating datasets and evaluating model outputs in collaboration with ML or product teams.
  • Strong grounding in psychology, sociology, linguistics, or related fields as they relate to personality, behavior, and dialect.
  • Methodical, hypothesis-driven approach to experimentation and iteration.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives, prioritize effectively, and operate independently in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain prompt design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable communicating with executive-level stakeholders.
  • Basic Python familiarity and comfort navigating unfamiliar codebases

Compensation:
The anticipated annual base salary range for this role is between $150,000-$180,000. When determining compensation, a number of factors will be considered, including skills, experience, job scope, location, and competitive compensation market data.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary and generous company equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance - 99.99% of premiums covered by Cantina
  • 42 days of paid time off, including:
    • 15 PTO days
    • 10 sick days
    • 15 company holidays
    • 2 floating holidays
  • Generous parental leave & fertility support
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Lifestyle spending account - $500/month to use however you'd like
  • Complimentary lunch and snacks for in-office employees
  • One Medical membership, and more!
