Toyota Automated Logistics is seeking a R&D Design Engineer Intern for the Summer of 2027 for our Grapevine, TX location.
Job Overview:
A Design Engineer Intern will work with a small R&D team in Dallas to produce an industry leading Mobile Robotic solution for the Material Handling Industry. They will utilize the latest technologies to integrate robotics into material handling systems for complex applications. This includes R&D and prototype development to successfully bring new products to market. The process involves understanding the customer's goals and objectives and developing engineered solutions to meet these goals.
A Design Engineer Intern works with and influences other Toyota Automated Logistics R&D employees, customers and suppliers to utilize the latest technologies while designing standard and custom equipment into material handling systems for complex applications. Technologies used in this position include high level automation, synchronous belt drive systems, pneumatics, vacuum generators, optical devices, specialty conveyors, robotics, end of arm tooling, 3D modeling, and simulation. The Design Engineer Intern will work on multiple projects and gain experience with concepting, research, estimating, component and material selection, design for manufacturing/assembly, system testing, support, system layouts, and service support.
Job Functions:
  • With guidance, help develop designs for special material handling related equipment from concept to detailed fabrication drawings
  • With assistance, create BOM for designs
  • Contribute to project teams, providing help outside of mechanical scope when required. Help resolve engineering issues as they arise by working closely with vendors and the shop
  • Meet and exceed our customer's expectations through superior design and implementation
  • Be a great team player and contributor within the office; be tolerant of others
  • Constantly review and master applicable business technology to ensure we are using the best tools
  • Track time spent by project and enter time using tracking software
  • Work with management to prioritize projects on macro level; ability to prioritize individual tasks on your own
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner
  • Develop equipment manual once project is completed
  • Work with management to follow standards regarding documentation format
  • Work well with the shop; pitch in where needed. Spend part of time in shop assembling the equipment you designed to better understand how the components come together
  • Maintain a consistently positive, enthusiastic attitude
  • Any and all job duties as assigned

Travel Requirements:
  • 10% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Toyota Automated Logistics)

Required Qualifications and Preferred Skills:
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Basic knowledge with 2D and 3D CAD experience (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc) required
  • Knowledge of motors, robotics, gearboxes, pneumatics, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), bearings
  • Basic experience in design for Manufacturing & Assembly with ability to produce fabrication/welding/assembly drawings from 3D models efficiently
  • Intermediate technical drawing skills, especially in 3D modeling
  • Able to work well in teams with good communication skills
  • Some experience developing and implementing quality improvement or cost reduction initiatives
  • Employees must follow all information security policies, protect confidential data, complete required training, and report any suspected security incidents to support our information security controls.
