What does a test tech do?

A Test Tech, or Test Technician, is responsible for inspecting, testing, and troubleshooting electronic components or products to ensure they meet quality and performance standards. They use specialized equipment and follow detailed procedures to identify and document any issues. Test Techs often work in manufacturing or laboratory environments and may also be involved in repairing or calibrating devices. Their work is essential for maintaining product reliability and safety before items reach customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Tech, you need a solid understanding of electronics, troubleshooting, and quality control, often supported by an associate degree or technical certification. Familiarity with oscilloscopes, multimeters, automated test equipment, and industry-specific software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate product testing, swift issue resolution, and reliable performance in manufacturing or engineering environments.

What are some common challenges faced by test technicians, and how can they effectively address them?

Test Technicians often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex equipment issues, managing tight deadlines for product testing, and ensuring precise documentation of test results. Effectively addressing these challenges requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and clear communication with engineers and team members. Proactively seeking clarification on test procedures and staying updated on the latest testing technologies can also help Test Technicians excel in their role.

What is the difference between Test Tech vs Quality Control Inspector?

AspectTest TechQuality Control Inspector
CertificationsOften requires technical certifications or training in testing proceduresTypically requires quality assurance or inspection certifications
Work EnvironmentWorks in labs, manufacturing plants, or testing facilitiesWorks mainly in inspection areas, production lines, or warehouses
Industry UsageCommonly used in electronics, manufacturing, and aerospace industriesWidely used across manufacturing, food production, and consumer goods

Test Techs focus on conducting technical tests and measurements to ensure product functionality, while Quality Control Inspectors primarily examine products for defects and adherence to standards. Both roles are essential in quality assurance but differ in their specific responsibilities and work environments.

Design the Test Systems Behind Advanced Defense Technology

Legion Technical Solutions is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer โ€“ Test Equipment to support one of the nation's premier aerospace and defense technology organizations.

This role is ideal for a mechanical engineer who enjoys taking complex test equipment from concept through detailed design, integration, validation, and production support. You'll develop mechanical solutions used to test sophisticated defense systems across demanding vibration, thermal, hydraulic, RF, and electro-optical environments.

What You'll Be Doing

As part of an experienced engineering team, you'll help design, develop, document, and maintain advanced mechanical test systems.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Design mechanical systems, fixtures, and components for advanced production test equipment.
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using ProE / CREO Parametric.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability, fit, and performance.
  • Develop innovative mechanical solutions for vibration, thermal, hydraulic, RF, and electro-optical test environments.
  • Support test equipment integration, troubleshooting, verification, and validation.
  • Ensure designs meet stringent performance, reliability, and production requirements.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation and configuration-controlled design data.
  • Collaborate with electrical, systems, software, manufacturing, and test engineers throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Support existing test equipment while contributing to new test system development.
What We're Looking For

Strong candidates will bring:

  • 3โ€“5 years of relevant Mechanical Engineering experience.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems, test equipment, fixtures, or related hardware.
  • Strong 3D CAD design and modeling experience, preferably ProE / CREO Parametric.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience developing and maintaining engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of configuration management and controlled engineering environments.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related STEM discipline.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance is required for consideration.

Experience with aerospace/defense products, production test equipment, environmental testing, or highly regulated engineering environments will be particularly valuable.

Why This Opportunity?

This position provides the opportunity to work at the intersection of mechanical engineering and advanced test technology. Rather than focusing exclusively on product design, you'll develop the specialized equipment required to prove that sophisticated defense systems perform reliably under demanding real-world conditions.

You'll work alongside experienced engineers while contributing directly to the successful production and delivery of missionโ€‘critical technology.
