The Lab Managerย is responsible forย the leadership, technical oversight, and day-to-day operation of a construction materials testing laboratory specializing in soil, aggregate, asphalt, concrete, and related construction materials.ย 

The Lab Manager / Project Manager is responsible for the leadership, technical oversight, and day-to-day operation of EXP's Soils and Materials Laboratory in Burnaby, BC. The role combines laboratory management with project delivery responsibilities, construction materials testing, and quality assurance programs across infrastructure, transportation, land development, municipal, commercial, and industrial projects throughout Western Canada.

The successful candidate will lead laboratory operations, mentor technical staff, manage project execution, maintain quality and safety standards, and work closely with engineers, project managers, clients, and contractors to deliver high-quality services and exceptional client experiences. The role also ensures compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, CCIL, and BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit requirements whileย maintainingย quality, safety, and operational excellence.ย

  • Manage daily laboratory operations for soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete testing programs.ย 
  • Coordinate testing schedules andย allocateย resources to meet project deadlines.ย 
  • Provide technical oversight for geotechnical and construction materials testing.ย 
  • Review and approve laboratory test results and reports.ย 
  • Maintain CCIL accreditation and quality management system requirements.ย 
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, and BC Ministry specifications.ย 
  • Oversee equipment calibration, maintenance, and replacement planning.ย 
  • Lead safety initiatives and ensure compliance withย WorkSafeBCย requirements.ย 
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate laboratory personnel.ย 
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, productivity, and profitability.
  • Support clients, project managers, audits, budgeting, and continuous improvement activities.ย 

What your experience looks like

  • Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related discipline.ย 
  • 5-10 years of construction materials testing experience.ย 
  • 3+ years of laboratory leadership or supervisory experience.ย 
  • Experience working in CCIL-accredited laboratories.ย 
  • CCIL, ACI,ย AScT, or P.Eng. designation considered an asset.ย 
  • Strong understanding of soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete testing.ย 
  • Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, and BC transportation specifications.ย 
  • Experience managing quality systems and laboratory accreditation.ย 
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.ย 
  • Proficiencyย with laboratory software and Microsoft Office applications.ย
