What is a test engineer QA?

Test Engineer QA (Quality Assurance) professionals are responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications through systematic testing. They design, develop, and execute test plans and scripts to identify bugs or issues before the software is released. Test Engineers work closely with developers and other stakeholders to understand requirements, report defects, and verify fixes. Their main goal is to deliver high-quality, reliable products to end-users by minimizing errors and improving performance.

How does a test engineer QA typically collaborate with software development and product teams during a project lifecycle?

Test Engineer QAs work closely with software developers and product managers throughout the software development lifecycle. They participate in sprint planning meetings to understand new features, clarify requirements, and identify potential risks early on. Regular communication with developers helps resolve bugs efficiently, while collaboration with product teams ensures test cases align with user expectations and business goals. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for delivering high-quality software and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer QA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer QA, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, test planning, and quality assurance principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), bug tracking systems, and possibly ISTQB certification is often expected. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure that software products meet quality standards, function as intended, and provide a reliable user experience.

Job description

Elite Software Engineer (Quality Assurance)

Elite Software Engineer (Quality Assurance)Houston, TX

Test Infrastructure, Software Development, Automation

Allthenticate is changing the way security feels and functions, prioritizing usability to create the most enjoyable experience for our users. Imagine a security product thatโ€™s not just necessary but a delight to use. Thatโ€™s what we live for.

Weโ€™re looking for more brilliant people to join our world-class team. Let us know why you are the teammate that weโ€™ve all be dreaming about working with.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Youโ€™ll build the systems that let us ship security software fearlessly. Our product spans a Rust core, a FastAPI backend, a Vue 3 web app, a desktop application with various low-level authentication integrations, and a Flutter mobile app โ€” and every one of them has to work perfectly, every single time, because people use us to unlock their doors and their laptops. Youโ€™ll write real features across that stack and build the test infrastructure that proves they work, so the whole team can move fast without breaking the things that matter.

Responsibilities

Youโ€™ll work across our stack and own the quality of what we ship. Expect to be doing a subset of the following:

Designing and building end-to-end test infrastructure with Playwright, Selenium, and Docker that runs reliably in CI and locally

Shipping features across the stack โ€” FastAPI services in Python, performance-critical work in Rust, Vue 3 interfaces, and Dart for mobile

Building test harnesses for hardware-backed authentication flows, including Bluetooth and cryptographic key handling

Containerizing test environments so a full system can be spun up, exercised, and torn down on demand

Hunting down flaky tests and race conditions, and fixing the root cause instead of the symptom

Reviewing code across languages and raising the engineering bar for everyone around you

What Weโ€™re Looking For

An insatiable desire to build something awesome

Strong experience building automated test infrastructure with tools like Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, or pytest

Fluency in Python and comfort with a typed systems language โ€” Rust experience is a big plus

Hands-on experience with Docker and modern CI/CD pipelines

Familiarity with a modern frontend framework โ€” we use Vue 3 โ€” and a willingness to work in Dart for mobile

A generalist streak: youโ€™d rather learn the unfamiliar part of the stack than hand the problem to someone else

A willingness to learn new skills and teach others what you already know

Ideal Superpowers

Experience testing across platforms โ€” web, desktop, iOS, and Android โ€” from a single suite

Rust in production, especially FFI or cross-compilation to mobile targets

Testing Bluetooth, embedded, or other hardware-in-the-loop systems

Knowledge of authentication, cryptographic paradigms, and general security concepts

A history of open-source contributions, CTF wins, or side projects you canโ€™t stop talking about

100% employer covered health, dental and vision insurance

Equity grant

401k with company matching

Opportunity to be a major contributor to world-changing technology

Work with a fun, inclusive, and accomplished team

Vibrant company culture with regular team activities (e.g., team dinners, pickleball, volleyball, escape rooms, and paintball)

What We Offer

If you strive to be the best in the world in your craft then this is the right place for you! You can expect a job that is challenging, fun, and team oriented. While working at Allthenticate, you can expect to always be doing hard things. We are trying to crack one of the hardest problems in Computer Science (secure, usable key management), and nothing about that is easy. Weโ€™ll be spending a lot of time together and we want to make sure that every minute of that is as pleasurable as possible. We have regular social outings to make sure we get to know each on a personal level and we are very flexible with hours to do our best to maximize happiness. We are taking on some of the hardest problems on earth -- itโ€™s going to take more than a few smart people -- it takes an elite team.
