Test Engineer Qa information

What does a QA test engineer do?

A QA test engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and executing tests to ensure software quality and functionality. They identify bugs, document issues, and work with developers to improve products, often using testing tools and scripting skills. Their role helps ensure that software meets specified requirements and standards before release.

What are Test Engineer QA?

Test Engineer QA (Quality Assurance) professionals are responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications through systematic testing. They design, develop, and execute test plans and scripts to identify bugs or issues before the software is released. Test Engineers work closely with developers and other stakeholders to understand requirements, report defects, and verify fixes. Their main goal is to deliver high-quality, reliable products to end-users by minimizing errors and improving performance.

How does a Test Engineer QA typically collaborate with software development and product teams during a project lifecycle?

Test Engineer QAs work closely with software developers and product managers throughout the software development lifecycle. They participate in sprint planning meetings to understand new features, clarify requirements, and identify potential risks early on. Regular communication with developers helps resolve bugs efficiently, while collaboration with product teams ensures test cases align with user expectations and business goals. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for delivering high-quality software and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Will QA or SDET get replaced by AI?

QA and SDET roles involve designing test cases, analyzing complex systems, and ensuring software quality, which currently require human judgment and expertise. While AI tools can assist with automation and repetitive tasks, they are unlikely to fully replace the need for skilled testers who understand application logic and can adapt to new testing scenarios.

What is the difference between Test Engineer Qa vs Test Analyst?

AspectTest Engineer QaTest Analyst
CertificationsISTQB, CSTEISTQB, CSTE
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, QA labsBusiness units, QA teams
Primary FocusDesign, develop, execute tests, automationTest planning, requirements analysis, manual testing
Industry UsageSoftware, hardware, tech companiesSoftware, finance, healthcare sectors

Test Engineer Qa typically focuses on creating and executing automated and manual tests, often working closely with development teams. Test Analysts mainly handle test planning, manual testing, and analyzing requirements. Both roles require similar certifications and are vital in ensuring product quality, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

Are QA testers in demand in 2026?

QA testers, including Test Engineers, are expected to remain in demand in 2026 due to ongoing software development and the need for quality assurance. Skills in automation tools and scripting languages will enhance job prospects as companies prioritize efficient testing processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Test Engineer QA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer QA, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, test planning, and quality assurance principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), bug tracking systems, and possibly ISTQB certification is often expected. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure that software products meet quality standards, function as intended, and provide a reliable user experience.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced software engineers, especially those in specialized roles such as senior software architects or engineering directors at large tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. These roles often require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes stock options or bonuses as part of compensation packages.

Job description

Motional's Las Vegas office is located less than 10 miles from the Las Vegas strip at 730 E Pilot Road and is home to one of the largest fleets of self-driving vehicles. The city's grid system of roads and being one of America's "smart cities" allows for extensive research and development testing.

Mission Summary:

The Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Test Engineering team at Motional is responsible for validating the safety, functionality, and performance of our self-driving technology and commercial operations platform through rigorous, system-level testing. Motional is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Automation Test Engineer to join our AV Test Engineering team. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and execution of backend and frontend automation frameworks for our fleet operations platform - the operational backbone of our commercial robotaxi service. You will also lead and mentor a fellow automation engineer, driving best practices and continuous improvement across the team.

What you'll work on:

  • Own the architecture, development, and maintenance of scalable backend and frontend test automation frameworks for a fleet operations platform, with a primary focus on backend API and service-level validation.
  • Design and execute comprehensive automated test suites covering backend services, APIs, and data pipelines, as well as frontend UI workflows within the operations platform.
  • Lead integration testing efforts for third-party APIs and internal services, ensuring reliable end-to-end data flow across fleet management, dispatching, and monitoring systems.
  • Develop automation solutions primarily in Python and Go for backend testing, and JavaScript for frontend validation, while proactively adopting new tools and frameworks as the platform evolves.
  • Lead, mentor, and collaborate with one automation test engineer, providing technical guidance, code reviews, and support for professional development.
  • Partner closely with software engineers and product teams to define test strategies, identify coverage gaps, and establish quality gates within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis on test failures and system defects, driving resolution across backend services and frontend interfaces.
  • Contribute to documentation, test plans, and operational frameworks that bring clarity and transparency to the automation testing process for all stakeholders.

What we're looking for:

  • 5+ years in software QA or test automation, with a strong emphasis on backend and API testing.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Hands-on proficiency in Python and Go for backend test automation, and JavaScript for frontend automation.
    • Demonstrated experience designing and building automation frameworks from the ground up for complex, distributed systems.
    • Experience with REST/gRPC API testing, service integration validation, and data pipeline verification.
    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated quality gates for production-grade software releases.
  • Proven ability to lead technical efforts, operate autonomously, and drive cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new tools, frameworks, and technologies as the platform and stack evolve.

Bonus points:

  • Experience with autonomous vehicle fleet monitoring, dispatching, or fleet management systems.
  • Experience with Uber API or similar ride-hail/transportation platform integration testing.
  • Familiarity with cloud telemetry systems or AV data pipelines.
  • Experience in a cross-site or global engineering organization.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.

This role is based in our Las Vegas office and requires in-office days each week.
