Test Engineer Qa information

What is a test engineer QA?

Test Engineer QA (Quality Assurance) professionals are responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications through systematic testing. They design, develop, and execute test plans and scripts to identify bugs or issues before the software is released. Test Engineers work closely with developers and other stakeholders to understand requirements, report defects, and verify fixes. Their main goal is to deliver high-quality, reliable products to end-users by minimizing errors and improving performance.

How does a test engineer QA typically collaborate with software development and product teams during a project lifecycle?

Test Engineer QAs work closely with software developers and product managers throughout the software development lifecycle. They participate in sprint planning meetings to understand new features, clarify requirements, and identify potential risks early on. Regular communication with developers helps resolve bugs efficiently, while collaboration with product teams ensures test cases align with user expectations and business goals. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for delivering high-quality software and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer QA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer QA, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, test planning, and quality assurance principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), bug tracking systems, and possibly ISTQB certification is often expected. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure that software products meet quality standards, function as intended, and provide a reliable user experience.

Both roles require similar certifications and are vital in ensuring product quality, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

Are QA engineers paid well?

QA engineers are generally paid competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, but experienced QA engineers with skills in automation tools and certifications can earn higher wages. Overall, QA engineering is considered a well-paying role within the tech industry.

Is a Test Engineer QA still in demand?

Yes, Test Engineer QA roles remain in demand due to ongoing needs for software quality assurance across industries. Skills in automation tools, scripting, and understanding of testing frameworks enhance employability in this field.

We are seeking a Senior QA / Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) with strong engineering capability to support (a) refactoring of existing client facing applications onto strategic components and/or (b) development of a new unified client portal. This is an automation driven engineering role working closely with Java and React engineers in a shared quality model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement automated unit, integration, end to end, and stress tests for both refactored components and new UI functionality, using existing internal frameworks and approved tools (e.g., Playwright, Postman).
  • Enhance current automation frameworks where necessary, aligned with established engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with backend and frontend engineers to test full workflows across UI, APIs, and microservices.
  • Participate in code and test reviews, contributing to testability, best practices, and engineering quality.
  • Perform limited exploratory testing early in the cycle until automation coverage is established.
  • Ensure automated tests integrate into CI/CD pipelines to support rapid, reliable delivery across both the refactoring programme and greenfield portal build.
  • Apply familiarity with Post Trade and Collateral Management lifecycle events (e.g., allocations, confirmations, settlements, margining) to design realistic and business aligned automated tests.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of combined software engineering and QA automation experience, consistent with seniority expectations across all roles.
  • Strong hands-on automation skills using Java or JavaScript/TypeScript, especially with Playwright, Postman, REST/JSON testing, and browser/UI automation.
  • Solid understanding of modern web systems (React frontends, REST APIs, microservices) and ability to test full-stack workflows.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Comfortable operating in environments without a separate QA team, where quality is owned collectively.
  • Strong debugging, analysis, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience testing systems within financial institutions, with exposure to trading, post-trade, collateral, or risk-related platforms in regulated environments.

Nice to Have

  • Experience testing cloud-hosted applications (AWS).
  • Exposure to Docker/Kubernetes environments.
  • Experience with performance or load testing tools.
