What is a test automation engineer intern?

Test Automation Engineer Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist in designing, developing, and executing automated tests for software applications under the supervision of experienced engineers. Their main role is to ensure that software products function correctly by using automation tools to identify bugs and verify code quality. Interns typically work with scripting languages, learn about different testing frameworks, and gain hands-on experience in the software development lifecycle. This position is ideal for those interested in starting a career in software quality assurance and automation engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a test automation engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Test Automation Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on creating, executing, and maintaining automated test scripts for software applications under the guidance of senior team members. You'll collaborate closely with developers and QA professionals to understand requirements, identify test cases, and ensure thorough test coverage. Interns often participate in daily stand-ups, code reviews, and may assist in troubleshooting issues discovered during automated testing. This role provides hands-on experience with popular automation tools and frameworks, helping build foundational skills for a career in software quality assurance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test automation engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Automation Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming concepts, software testing methodologies, and knowledge of at least one scripting language, often backed by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and experience with version control systems such as Git, are typically expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These abilities ensure efficient test coverage, fast identification of software issues, and productive teamwork in the software development lifecycle.

Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Test Automation Engineer to join a team of qualified, diverse professionals supporting mission-critical modernization efforts. The ideal candidate will lead the design and implementation of advanced automated testing frameworks to validate Medicare claims processing during a large-scale dual run modernization initiative. This role is pivotal in ensuring accuracy, reliability, and seamless integration between legacy systems and modern platforms, contributing to the overall success of system transformation efforts at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Key Responsibilities
  • Leading the design, development, and implementation of automated test frameworks supporting dual-run validation of Medicare claims processing.
  • Creating automated test suites that compare Facets claims outputs to legacy system results to support a 95% claim match rate target.
  • Designing and maintaining continuous testing pipelines integrated into CI/CD environments to support scalable and repeatable validation activities.
  • Establishing automated test coverage across functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end scenarios.
  • Developing strategies and tooling for automated test data creation using empirical and production-representative datasets.
  • Authoring, maintaining, and governing the project's Quality Management Plan (QMP), ensuring alignment with program-level quality standards.
  • Providing technical leadership, mentorship, and oversight to test automation engineers and manual testers.
  • Collaborating closely with development, architecture, DevOps, and business teams to ensure automated testing is embedded throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Troubleshooting automation issues, optimizing stability and performance of test suites, and ensuring traceability across requirements, tests, and defects.
  • Participating in Agile ceremonies and contributing to continuous improvement of testing processes, tools, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of 8 years of experience with a BS/BA degree, 6 years with an MS/MA degree, or 3 years with a PhD.
Technical Skills:
  • Hands-on experience building automated test frameworks and large-scale automated test suites.
  • Demonstrated experience using automation tools such as Cucumber, Selenium, Postman, JUnit, Jira, TestRail, or similar.
  • Proven experience validating complex transactional or rules-based systems, ideally involving dual-run or parallel production testing.
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD tools and processes (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or similar).
  • Experience designing functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end automated testing strategies.
  • Ability to develop and maintain empirical data-driven test data strategies.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate testing approaches, results, and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Facets or other healthcare claims processing platforms.
  • Background supporting Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) programs or other federal healthcare environments.
  • Experience testing or modernizing legacy-to-modern system migrations.
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Plans, QA governance, and traceability practices in federal programs.
  • Experience working in scaled Agile environments (SAFe or similar).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., ISTQB, Certified Agile Tester, AWS/Azure cloud certifications).
