Job description
The Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all operations and personnel in accordance with the loading and unloading of the ship including terminal operations. He or She will oversee the coordination of Terminal operations and Checker procedures to ensure a smooth transition of cargo from over the road to the vessel. The Superintendent must work closely with the Clerks and the Terminal Foremen to coordinate daily operations and employee discipline.
He or she must be proficient in every job associated with the loading and unloading of the ship. The Superintendent is responsible for the safety and production of all personnel working and may be expected to be present for the duration of the ship operations. He or she must be able to comprehend documents pertaining to the operations, including, but not limited to, load plans, time sheet, etc..
The Superintendent must be familiar with all labor positions, all company rules and regulations, and must possess the necessary skills to motivate and lead the headers and gangs. The Superintendent must be multi task oriented and be able to organize large groups of individuals to work together as a team. The Superintendent must participate in employee professional development, show self control and professionalism in all situations, and must be fair and equitable in his or her treatment of subordinates.
The incumbent must at all times display a high sense of pride and integrity and will possess the strongest customer service skills. Requires the individual selected to sign a confidentiality agreement, which will be a condition of employment. Any breaches of this agreement will grounds for demotion and or dismissal.
The Superintendent must possess excellent written skills as well as oral skills as it may require the individual to correspond directly with the customer. This position will require the incumbent to discipline employees as well as reward and require the individual to posses the utmost mature ability to make sound and fair judgments. He or she will be required to participate in accident investigation and requires a keen knowledge base of DOT, and OSHA regulations.The Superintendent should have experience with and understand all equipment used in operations, including, but not limited to, forklifts up to 45,000 lbs., trucks, personal vehicles, cranes, etc
He or she must understand the yard and its functions and understand all of their job functions and their relationship to production on the vessel. The Superintendent must be able to read and understand complex alphanumeric codes, for example, container numbers and VIN numbers. He or she should possess excellent leadership, communication, and motivational skills and should be "in all places at all times.
