DEFINITION/SELECTION PROCESS
CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENTS ARE generally for PART-TIME, TEMPORARY OR "ON-CALL" positions. These positions are non-benefited.
The Parks & Recreation Department continuously seeks candidates for the position of Slide Dispatcher. However, there may not be any current openings.
Under general supervision, to provide a safe environment at the Lompoc Aquatic Center while effectively dispatching patrons on water slides.
Incumbents will work a varying schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to: written examination, panel interview and/or performance examination, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/examples of duties:
The following duties are typical of this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  1. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  2. Conducts slide inspections to check for hazardous conditions prior to operation.
  3. Keep the aquatics area clean and clear of potential safety hazards and immediately informs the Head Lifeguard or the Aquatic Supervisor of any issues or necessary repairs.
  4. Maintains accurate records and completes reports as required by the Aquatic Center and/or the state health department code.
  5. Dispatches patrons properly through the water slides.
  6. Maintains a level of professionalism and models customer service skills when interacting with patrons and program participants.
  7. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  8. Assists in performing cleaning services of the pool and other assigned areas.
  9. Assists in Recreation Division activities and special events.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training, education, and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Minimum Age: 16 years
License/Certifications Required: Possession of current and valid certifications for basic Life Support (Professional Rescuer CPR/AED) and First Aid.
Knowledge of: Basic First Aid principles and practices; and basic knowledge of safety procedures, rules, and regulations for the aquatic center.
Ability to: Maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness; demonstrate slide dispatching skills in accordance with Lompoc Aquatic Center procedures; and understand and administer Aquatic Center rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and program schedules.

PHYSICAL: Heavy Work - Lifting, carrying, and/or pushing 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds. May involve significant standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, handling, gripping, grasping, twisting at the waist, reaching at, above and below shoulder level, extending neck upward, downward, and side to side, climbing stairs, crouching, and kneeling. Vision: Visual acuity which could be corrected sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust. Hearing: Effectively hear/comprehend oral instructions and communication; hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.
Mental/Psychological: Work cooperatively and interact appropriately with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public; respond quickly to changing priorities; communicate effectively orally; perform effective multi-tasking; utilize basic reading, writing, and math skills; understand, remember and carry out job instructions; knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines; and work under pressure.

• At-Will designation refers to full-time employees in certain classifications and all part-time, temporary employees. The unclassified, non-budgeted employee is at-will, has no probationary period, and may be rejected at any time without cause and without the right of appeal.
• Part-time, temporary appointments are "at-will" assignments, not subject to the competitive service process, and serve at the direction and discretion of the assigned department.
• Part-time, temporary appointments are not eligible to receive vacation, holidays, or any other benefits provided to budgeted, regular status employees.
• Part-time, temporary appointments, including PT PERS are eligible to accrue paid sick leave up to 5 days or 40 hours of accrued paid sick leave per year. Any accrued sick leave cannot be cashed out upon termination. (PT Retiree Annuitants are not eligible to accrue paid sick leave.)
• Part-time, temporary appointments can be made for a period of up to 19 hours per week and cannot exceed 1,000 hours worked within one fiscal year without prior approval.
