About Walden School:
Walden School is a nationally-recognized residential therapeutic and education program for deaf children and youth ages 8 to 22 who have often experienced significant adverse childhood events as well as language deprivation.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for implementing treatment plans and for the direct care and safety of the children residing at Walden School.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise children in daily routines and assist with the activities of daily living skills.
Support and assist children using methods which reflect the treatment philosophy of Walden School.
Develop and maintain meaningful and supportive relationships with the children while maintaining appropriate adult/child boundaries.
Convey all pertinent information concerning students to other staff via e-mail, logs and incident reports.
Maintain current certification in PART, Pro-Act, OSHA, CPR and First Aid.
Utilize behavior management techniques that are consistent with the Walden School mission statement and individual students treatment plans.
Prepare living skills activities that are age and skill appropriate for students in the unit.
May be delegated medication administration or certain medical procedure responsibilities if needed by a student under the teacher's care.
Maintain student confidentiality.
May be required to drive students and additional driving responsibilities as needed.
Some lifting and restraints may be required when working with young students or students with special needs, however, TLC embraces and celebrates a spirit of inclusion and diversity, and reasonable accommodations and modifications will be made whenever possible. The diversity of our student population may require that some assignments have a heavier physical responsibility due to safety.
Perform other tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.

Requirements
  • At least one year of experience in a residential treatment program or a degree in Human Services preferred
  • Previous experience with crisis prevention and ability to prevent harmful behaviors preferred
  • Must be able to remain calm, non-defensive with a supportive attitude during crisis or potential crisis
  • A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred
  • ASL Classes may be required based on ASL fluency
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record when driving students or performing work-related duties
  • Willingness to transport students in TLC vehicles
  • Must be able and willing to swim with students to provide safe supervision during water activities
