Important Note:

*If you are hired into this position, you must pass the next Civil Service Exam and be hired from the resulting list for this title to obtain permanent civil service status.
Compensation:
Salary Range: The current minimum salary for Stationary Engineer is $73.90 per hour for a 40-hour week. This rate is subject to change. The benefits of this position include, but are not limited to, night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan and a pension plan.
Responsibilities:
Stationary Engineers, under supervision, operate, maintain and adjust steam power plant and electro-mechanical building equipment. They operate, maintain and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, cooling towers, including equipment for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and associated equipment in public buildings, municipal pumping stations and incinerators; make periodic inspections of equipment and minor repairs to such equipment; perform preventive maintenance; take charge of a watch, and while so engaged are responsible for and direct subordinate personnel; may operate control consoles in control rooms; prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts; instruct and train subordinates and other personnel; read meters, gauges, and other recording devices and log the data; keep records and write reports; as directed, inspect low pressure boilers in accordance with a unified inspection procedure instituted by the New York City Department of Buildings; may operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.
Special Working Conditions: Stationary Engineers may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Some of the physical activities performed by Stationary Engineers and environmental conditions experienced are: working in confined areas in a physical plant, including a boiler room, heating room, and/or ventilating room; walking up and down stairs; climbing up and down ladders; handling chemicals; and being around hazardous materials, such as asbestos and infectious waste.
Eligibility and License Requirements (Promotional):
This examination is open to each employee of New York City Transit who by the first date of the assessment:
  1. Is permanently (not provisionally) employed in the eligible title of High Pressure Plant Tender; and
  2. Possesses a valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings; and
  3. Is not otherwise ineligible

For certain positions candidates will also be required to obtain, within 90 days from the day of appointment, a valid certificate of fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler and/or Air Compressor issued by the New York City Fire Department.

You must meet the following requirements:
  1. Possess a valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

For certain positions candidates will also be required to obtain, within 90 days from the day of appointment, a valid certificate of fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler and/or Air Compressor issued by the New York City Fire Department.

Requirements to be Appointed or Promoted:
Drug Screening Requirement: You must pass a drug screening in order to be appointed or promoted.
Residency: New York City residency is not required for this position.
English Requirement: You must be able to understand and be understood in English to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Proof of Identity: Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you must be able to prove your identity and your right to obtain employment in the United States prior to employment with MTA Bus Company.
Driver License Requirement: At the time of appointment or promotion, you must have a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York with no disqualifying restrictions that would preclude the performance of the duties of this title. If you have serious moving violations, a license suspension or an accident record you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment in the title.
Additional Information
Training: You may be required to undergo a formalized training course during your probationary period. Failure to successfully complete the training course may result in termination.
Probationary Period: You will be required to complete a probationary period. If you do not successfully complete the probationary period, you may be terminated.
Other Information
As an employee of MTA NYC Transit you may be required to complete an annual financial disclosure statement with the state of New York, if your position earns more than $101,379 (this is subject to change) per year or if the position is designated as a policy maker.
