Job description

Overview

The D237 Test Services and Support Mechanic is responsible to support the performance of the Steam and Electric Plant (S&EP), and Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (HM&E) Test programs for the VIRGINIA Class and COLUMBIA Class in Groton, and routing, installing, and servicing various mechanical temporary services and systems.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing testing and operations in Test Facilities, COATS, Pure Water Shed, Duck Pond, Machine Shop (LPT & LET Testing), and other testing and activities
  • Standing crib issue point attendant ensuring correct materials are issued to testers that are in compliance with application, rating, and conformity to their intended end use
  • Reading and interpreting isometric, mechanical system, and test equipment drawings/diagrams for kit building and test equipment assembly
  • Achieving and maintaining qualifications in NAVSEA 6010, Steam Plant Clean, and Grade A
  • Conducting preventative maintenance of test equipment and shipboard equipment to include hydrostatic testing of Test Facilities’ hoses and operational checks and repairs of Test Facilities’ equipment
  • Working shipboard with mechanical testers to troubleshoot and analyze issues that arise with test equipment and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Routing, installing, and servicing various mechanical temporary services and systems for Test
  • Using shop equipment to clean, service, repair, and fabricate test equipment (ultra-sonic sink, drill press, etc.)
  • Operating with the highest level of integrity and formality with strict compliance on material history and handling
  • Possessing a flexible schedule to accommodate major milestone and key event testing as required
  • Performing heavy lifting, pulling and climbing (ladders) and work in tight/confined spaces for extended periods of time
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED or 2 years of related technical experience 
  • 5+ years of mechanical experience
  • Prior military training or mechanical job experience or training from Vocational or Technical School or Community College.

Preferred:

  • Candidate should be Self-Motivated and technically minded with an understanding of the submarine test program
  • Warehousing experience and organizational skills including inventory, attention to detail, and customer service.
