EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I - STREETS
Category: Full-Time

DEFINITION
To drive trucks and light equipment; perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and storm drains and right of way maintenance.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is in the entry level class in the Equipment Operator class series. Employees in this class normally work under close supervision performing a group of repetitive or closely related duties according to established procedures. Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from higher level classes by responsibility for operating a limited range of light and moderate equipment and vehicles.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from higher level Street Maintenance personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Drive and may operate light to moderate construction equipment on routine assignments or on a training basis, including skip rollers, concrete saws, backhoes and tractor mowers.
  • Repair and patch streets by hand-sweeping surfaces, loading asphalt, and raking and shoveling asphalt.
  • Participate in working with a small street patching crew in completing work orders.
  • Operate tractors and mowers in the maintenance of drainage channels and right-of-ways.
  • May participate in concrete work such as curb, gutter, and sidewalk repair.
  • Inspect ditches, drainage areas and roadside shoulders for removal of weeds and application of herbicides.
  • Drive and operate trucks and equipment used in the application of larvacides and insecticides for control of mosquitoes.
  • Drive a variety of pickup and dump trucks.
  • Perform regular storm drain maintenance and emergency storm work.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to chemical, fume, odor, and mechanical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat and noise; sitting; seeing; grasping; twisting body; standing; walking; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person and by two-way radio; fine finger manipulation; operating light to medium equipment through city traffic.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Street and utility construction materials, tools and equipment.
  • Methods employed in basic laboring and maintenance work.
  • Safety precautions used in hazardous construction maintenance.

Ability to:
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Perform semi-skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, gutters, and related public works facilities.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Some experience in the operation of light construction equipment and vehicles and a High School Diploma or GED.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months, a valid Texas Class B CDL.
