Job description
Position Summary:
At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Trade Generalists are valuable members of our team, who perform journey-level work in one trade, and skilled and semiskilled level work in a combination of other trades in the repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment. Incumbents frequently supervise others in maintenance, repair, installation and construction activities.
Duties of a Trades Generalist may include the following but are not limited to:
- Requires working knowledge of apprentice standards of electrical code regulations
- Read circuit diagrams, architectural blueprints and schematics, generator and motor control programs, and technical manuals, codes and diagrams.
- Use tools of the electrical trade, including standard hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments such as mega, ampmeters, voltmeter, etc. used in electrical field.
- Basic knowledge of electric theory and practice as applied to the electrical trade.
- Replace or repair defective components and wiring and, as necessary, adjust electrical parts.
- Perform electrical work in repair, maintenance and installation of electrical systems.
- Maintain, test and log emergency generator and associated equipment, tools and shop machinery.
- Install fixtures and other electrical equipment, including outlets, switches, generator and motor controls, floor tiles, and repair ceiling tiles and all elements of suspended ceilings, spackle and paint walls.
- Possess experience working on HVAC systems, cutting and threading pipe. Mechanical knowledge of installing bearings, pump seals, drive belts, and filters.
- Working knowledge of the refrigeration cycle, code regulations, electrical, plumbing, HVAC/refrigeration and carpentry.
- Repair, maintain and install plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, and associated plumbing apparatus.
- Utilize the tools of the plumbing trade, and the tools, machines, equipment and materials of the carpentry trade.
- Conduct inspections of the facility to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair based on the particular maintenance problem.
- Receive, comprehend and follow instructions.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses at a school or institute may be substituted for the above training and experience on a year-to-year basis in Electrical and Air Conditioning/Refrigeration trades.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class EPA Refrigeration Certification course.

Working Conditions:
Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

- The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department.
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s).

- The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.
- This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
- The use of Vacation or Personal Leave accruals during the first 6 months of employment will not be authorized unless prior approval has been granted by Human Resources.
