Temporary Solar Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Solar Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Solar Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, experience with solar energy systems, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, PVsyst, and knowledge of industry standards and safety protocols are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you adapt quickly to project-based environments. These capabilities ensure efficient project execution, system reliability, and smooth collaboration within fast-paced renewable energy projects.

What are Temporary Solar Engineers?

Temporary Solar Engineers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to design, install, maintain, or troubleshoot solar energy systems. They typically work on specific projects or during peak workload periods, assisting with tasks such as site assessments, system design, and performance analysis. Their expertise helps ensure that solar installations are efficient, safe, and meet regulatory standards. Temporary roles are common in the renewable energy industry, especially during large installations or project deadlines.

What are some unique challenges that Temporary Solar Engineers typically face in project-based roles?

Temporary Solar Engineers often need to quickly adapt to new teams, technologies, and project requirements, which can be challenging given the fast-paced nature of solar installations. They may work on multiple sites with varying safety protocols, timelines, and client expectations, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, the temporary nature of the role means engineers must rapidly familiarize themselves with site-specific conditions and deliver quality work within limited timeframes. Collaborating effectively with permanent staff and contractors is essential to ensure project milestones are met and technical standards are upheld.

What is the difference between Temporary Solar Engineer vs Solar Technician?

AspectTemporary Solar EngineerSolar Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree or related certificationTechnical diploma or certification in solar technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and project management on-site or office-basedInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting on-site
Employer & Industry UsageSolar development companies, engineering firmsSolar installation companies, maintenance providers

Temporary Solar Engineers focus on project design, planning, and technical oversight, often working in office or site environments. Solar Technicians primarily handle installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks on solar systems. While both roles require technical knowledge, the engineer role emphasizes planning and design, whereas the technician role is more hands-on with equipment.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

The position is within the In-Space Systems business unit reporting to the Blue Ring Spacecraft Power Systems integrated product lead. In this role, you will be accountable for driving future In-Space Systems products and services by developing spacecraft hardware and architectures to meet our business goals.

The selected candidate requires strong spacecraft design experience with an emphasis on solar arrays, and systems engineering, as well as excellent collaboration skills to work across multiple disciplines and business areas across Blue Origin. This position requires 8+ years of experience with advanced spacecraft electrical power subsystem (EPS) design and architecture experience and a demonstrated ability to design to cost and design for manufacturing at rate. Deep understanding of common EPS architectures, analysis methods, and components such as batteries, solar arrays, and power management and distribution (PMAD) is required. You will contribute to innovative solutions, while demonstrating personal leadership, technical judgement and competence, and a passion for the highest technical standards partnering with engineering leadership to achieve program goals with acceptable risk.

Responsibilities:

As an EPS Responsible Engineer, you will be responsible for hardware developments for spacecraft EPS with a primary focus on solar array development. In this role, you will be accountable to develop the conceptual electrical power subsystem architecture, including sizing of solar arrays, and designs for future Blue Origin spacecraft. The ideal candidate will have breadth and deep technical knowledge of common spacecraft EPS architectures and components. You will be required to take high level mission architectures and spacecraft bus concepts and derive the ideal EPS architecture for those concepts. You must be competent at performing EPS sizing and Energy Balance Analysis (EBA), voltage drop, bus stability, developing power budgets, and other common EPS analyses. You will understand common EPS components such as batteries, solar arrays (photovoltaics), and PMAD devices such as power distribution, power supplies, solar array regulation, and battery charge control electronics.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, experience, enthusiasm, and dedication to quality to support our customers' critical missions. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a B.S. in an electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of advanced spacecraft EPS subsystem design including solar arrays, architecture, and development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with spacecraft EPS architectures and designs that operate in earth centered-orbital regimes from Earth orbiting (LEO to GEO) and deep space.
  • Experience with space grade III-V multijunction and silicon solar cells including understanding of performance, testing, and manufacturing of Standard Power Modules (SPMs).
  • Expertise with EPS components such as PMAD, batteries, solar arrays, wire harnessing, Solar Array Drive Assemblies (SADAs).
  • Expertise with EPS analysis such as Energy Balance Analysis (EBA), EPS sizing, voltage drop analysis, bus stability analysis, transient analysis.
  • Experience developing and maintaining EPS power budgets.
  • Experience with high voltage and dual-voltage power busses is desired.
  • Highly organized with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven track record to operate with cohesive and effective teams and drive rapid decision making within those teams.
  • Experience with development in mission and safety-critical environments.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing & Cost.
  • Ability to travel and/or temporary duty in support of growing tempos of production and operations.
