What is a temporary software engineer?

A Temporary Software Engineer is a short-term position where an engineer is hired to work on software development projects for a limited period. These roles are often used to fill gaps in teams, handle increased workloads, or contribute to specific project phases. Temporary software engineers perform coding, debugging, testing, and other development tasks like permanent employees but without long-term commitments. Depending on company needs, these roles may last from a few weeks to several months.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a temporary software engineer?

A Temporary Software Engineer should have a strong background in programming languages, software development methodologies, and relevant degrees or certifications, such as a bachelor's in computer science. Familiarity with tools like Git, project management platforms, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or .NET is often necessary. Excellent communication, adaptability, and time management skills help a candidate quickly integrate into teams and contribute effectively to short-term projects. These competencies ensure a Temporary Software Engineer can deliver high-quality results within limited timelines and dynamic work environments.

What types of projects are temporary software engineers typically assigned to, and how do these assignments differ from permanent roles?

Temporary Software Engineers are usually brought on to support specific short-term projects, address skill gaps, or help meet approaching deadlines. They may work on software module development, bug fixes, system migrations, or assisting during peak workload periods. Unlike permanent staff, their assignments are often well-defined with clear objectives and limited durations, which means they are expected to quickly understand project requirements and make immediate contributions. Temporary roles can provide valuable exposure to diverse technologies and work environments, making them an excellent opportunity for broadening experience and building a professional network.

Job Title

Senior Software Engineer, Backend and PostgreSQL

What does a successful Senior Software Engineer do at Fiserv?

Finxact, a Fiserv company, is an enterprise-class, cloud-native banking platform and transaction-processing engine built on open APIs. Our platform enables banks, fintech companies, and embedded-finance providers to launch and operate financial products with agility, scalability, and reliability.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design and develop scalable backend services, contribute to database modernization and migration initiatives, and help solve complex technical problems across our platform. Our backend services are primarily written in Go, but we welcome experienced engineers with strong expertise in another modern programming language who are interested in becoming proficient in Go.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs.
  • Lead or contribute to database migration and modernization projects.
  • Analyze existing applications and databases to identify dependencies, risks, and technical requirements.
  • Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, indexes, partitions, triggers, and stored procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, product teams, and other stakeholders to define and deliver technical solutions.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, reliability, and performance throughout the software-development and migration processes.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve design, implementation, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, production support, and mentoring of other engineers.

What you will need to have

  • 7+ years of professional software-engineering experience.
  • Strong experience developing production backend systems in Go or another modern programming language.
  • Ability and willingness to become productive in Go.
  • 5+ years of experience with relational databases, including database design, optimization, and data-migration techniques.
  • Strong PostgreSQL experience or comparable experience with another enterprise relational database.
  • Experience with query optimization, indexing, data modeling, partitioning, triggers, and stored procedures.
  • Experience operating applications or databases in a cloud environment.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools while independently validating generated output.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • A passion for technology, continuous learning, and solving complex engineering problems.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, professional experience, and/or military experience.

What would be great to have

  • Production experience developing backend services in Go.
  • Advanced PostgreSQL experience, including PL/pgSQL, replication, high availability, or performance tuning.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures, containers, Kubernetes, microservices, or distributed systems.
  • Experience with change data capture, database replication, or large-scale data migrations.
  • Experience with performance and load testing.
  • Experience with specification-driven development, including translating requirements into technical specifications, implementation plans, and automated tests.

Important information about this role

  • We're better together. This role is fully on-site.
