Temporary Residential Structural Engineer information

What is a temporary residential structural engineer?

Temporary Residential Structural Engineers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to assess, design, and ensure the structural integrity of residential buildings. They provide expertise for projects such as renovations, additions, repairs, or new constructions. Their responsibilities often include evaluating existing structures, preparing engineering drawings, and ensuring compliance with local building codes. Temporary positions are typically project-based, lasting only for the duration of a specific assignment. These engineers play a crucial role in maintaining safety and efficiency in residential construction projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary residential structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Residential Structural Engineer, you need a solid understanding of structural analysis, building codes, and residential construction, typically supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (e.g., P.E. or E.I.T.). Familiarity with structural design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SAP2000, as well as experience with inspection tools, is crucial. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient, and compliant residential structures, even within the constraints of a temporary assignment.

What are the typical challenges faced by a temporary residential structural engineer when joining a new project?

As a Temporary Residential Structural Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to existing project workflows, familiarizing yourself with local building codes, and understanding site-specific constraints. You’ll often need to rapidly build rapport with a new team and efficiently assess project documentation to identify potential structural concerns. Effective communication and time management are key, as you’re expected to deliver high-quality engineering solutions within tight deadlines, often with limited onboarding time.

What is the difference between Temporary Residential Structural Engineer vs Structural Designer?

AspectTemporary Residential Structural EngineerStructural Designer
CredentialsEngineering degree, PE license, specialized in structural analysisEngineering or architecture degree, may or may not be licensed
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, design offices, project sitesDesign offices, CAD environments, project planning
Employer & IndustryEngineering firms, construction companies, architectural firmsArchitectural firms, design consultancies, construction companies
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The Temporary Residential Structural Engineer focuses on on-site structural assessments and modifications for residential projects, often working temporarily on-site. In contrast, a Structural Designer primarily develops design plans and drawings in office settings. Both roles require a background in structural engineering, but the engineer typically holds a PE license and works directly on structural integrity, while the designer concentrates on creating detailed plans. Understanding these differences helps clients find the right professional for their residential structural needs.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
About the role
We design the structures behind the homes people actually live in - custom builds, tract developments shaping new neighborhoods, and everything in between. We're looking for a Project Engineer I to take ownership of residential structural design packages and grow into a technical leader on our team.
This isn't a role where you'll be buried in spreadsheets waiting for someone to hand you the next task. You'll coordinate directly with architects, builders, and clients; run your own projects from schematic through construction administration; and mentor junior engineers along the way. You'll have senior staff backing you up on project direction, but the technical driver's seat is yours.
What you'll be doing
You'll independently design gravity and lateral systems for custom and production residential projects - engineered wood framing, cold-formed steel, light-gauge connections, foundations on a range of soil conditions, and the occasional steel or concrete element that residential work throws at you. You'll build and troubleshoot models in RISA, run member and component checks in Enercalc, and turn that analysis into permit-ready drawing sets that don't come back with a stack of review corrections.
You'll apply the IBC and the relevant material design standards with confidence, work within Apex's internal design standards and details, and know when something needs a senior engineer's eyes before it leaves the office. You'll respond to contractor RFIs, review shop drawings in Bluebeam, and visit sites to work through the field issues that inevitably come up - writing reports that are clear, professional, and actually useful.
Day-to-day, you'll also keep your own budget and schedule on track, give your project manager a heads-up when something's trending sideways, and help shape our standards and details as we grow.
What we're looking for
  • 2+ years of structural design experience on custom homes, production homes, or both
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Architectural, or Structural Engineering
  • EIT required; progress toward PE licensure preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of residential framing systems and foundation design
  • Proficiency with Revit for structural documentation and coordination
  • Experience with RISA and Enercalc for analysis and member design
  • Comfort with Bluebeam for markups, reviews, and submittals
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD for legacy drawings and limited production work
  • Clear, direct communication - with clients, contractors, and your own team
  • Attention to detail that shows up in your drawings before someone has to point it out
Why Apex
We're a growing firm with offices in Kansas City, Lawrence, KS, and Denver, CO, and our Kansas City team takes engineering seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. Our clients are repeat clients for a reason, and our residential practice is expanding. You'll get real project ownership, real mentorship, and a seat at the table when we're figuring out where we're headed next.
Location
This role is based in our Kansas City, MO office, and that's our preferred location. We're also open to candidates who would work out of our Denver, CO office for the right fit.
Compensation
[For Colorado applicants, per C.R.S. § 8-5-201 et seq.] The anticipated salary range for this position is $80,000 - $115,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Apex also offers health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with 4% company match; PTO; professional development support and more.

  • Sponsorship. We're unable to offer visa sponsorship at this time. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Passed or scheduled to take the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam. - required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred or achieved shortly after promotion.
  • 2-6+ years of structural design experience.

Other Requirements

  • Occasional travel to project sites or client meetings may be required.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for site visits.
