Job Summary:
Reliability and Maintainability Engineer will Provide comprehensive engineering support throughout the entire lifecycle of Air Force (AF) and joint service weapon systems. This role involves applying engineering principles to enhance performance, reliability, safety, and sustainability, while ensuring compliance with airworthiness and operational standards.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply DoD, AF, and industry-standard engineering practices to support weapon system development, performance improvement, and sustainment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of MIL-HDBK-516C Airworthiness Certification Criteria for aircraft systems and subsystems.
  • Support System Integrity Programs such as the Mechanical Systems Integrity Program (MECSIP), maintain and update the Critical Safety Item (CSI) list, and monitor airworthiness certification.
  • Implement AF policies including AFPD 62-6 and associated AFIs and bulletins related to airworthiness and flight authorizations.
  • Translate user and operational requirements into technical system requirements for the design, development, fabrication, testing, and deployment of weapon systems and subsystems.
  • Develop action plans and policies to ensure high standards in manufacturing, remanufacturing, operations, and demilitarization/disposal.
  • Conduct mission and technical analyses, assess trade-offs in system design/modifications, and provide engineering solutions for critical supportability problems.
  • Perform system safety engineering, including mishap risk assessments and evaluation of safety concerns and documentation.
  • Support material solution analyses and produce or assist with presentations and documentation as needed for program milestones.
  • Develop, review, and support a wide range of technical and acquisition documents including:
    • ICDs, CDDs, CPDs, CONOPS
    • System Requirements Documents (SRDs), System Specifications
    • SEPs, TEMPs, PESHEs, PPPs
    • Technology Transition Plans, Information Assurance Strategies, and more
  • Provide inputs for staff packages and executive briefings for milestone coordination and approvals.
  • Participate in program meetings, technical working groups, and design reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, TIMs, PRRs, and PMRs.
  • Analyze and support correction of equipment and software deficiencies; assist in solution development, integration, and testing.
  • Evaluate engineering proposals and changes (e.g., ACSNs, ECPs, CCPs), FAA bulletins, and risk assessments from OEMs and subcontractors.
  • Develop and review cost estimates and schedules, including IMPs, IMSs, and System Engineering Detail Schedules (SEDS).
  • Provide advisory support for source selections and engineering requirement evaluations.
  • Implement and support Life Cycle Systems Engineering (LCSE) and Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness (OSS&E) practices, including compliance tracking and documentation updates.
  • Monitor OSS&E metrics and support coordination with stakeholders to maintain compliance.
  • Implement Systems Engineering Plan (SEP) processes and identify/address gaps or shortfalls.
  • Facilitate value stream mapping and apply Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century (AFSO21) practices to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Translate production and operational needs into engineering goals; assess suitability, functionality, and manufacturability of systems.
  • Manage configuration, data, and risk processes; support environmental assessments and technical audits.
  • Conduct system design and feasibility assessments, reliability evaluations, and cost-performance analyses.
  • Support Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) reviews and utilize G081 or equivalent systems for failure tracking and reporting.
  • Evaluate OEM technical proposals for system compatibility, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Ensure effective R&M strategies are integrated into program planning and execution with milestone-based verification.

Education:

Functionally Aligned Minimum Recommended Education and Experience:

  • Advanced Degree (Master of Arts (MA) / Master of Science (MS)) and twelve (12) years of experience in the respective technical / professional discipline being performed, five (5) years of which must be in the DoD
  • OR, BA/BS degree, and fifteen (15) years of experience in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, five (5) of which must be in the DoD
  • OR, twenty (20) years of directly related experience with proper certifications as described in the Functionally Aligned Job Descriptions, eight (8) of which must be in the DoD.
  • U.S. Citizenship required; Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance at the required level

Additional Engineering/Computer Science Education Requirements:

  • Engineering positions, require successful completion of an undergraduate degree with a major in engineering from a college or university with an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited engineering program(s) for the degree requirements of the position (e.g. electrical, mechanical, aerospace). Degrees in engineering from a non-accredited ABET program are not considered to be qualified for these positions.
  • To fill engineering technology and/or computer science positions, it is recommended that the Contractor have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in engineering technology or computer science from a college or university with an ABET-accredited engineering technology or computer science program.
  • For engineering and computer science positions the degree must have been received in the year of, or any year subsequent to the original date of accreditation. To find out if a school has an ABET accreditation, go to ABET accredited schools (http://www.abet.org).
