Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...The Staff Software Engineer will lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks, aligned with strategic roadmaps. This role encompasses full lifecycle ownership of software solutions, from design and coding to deployment and maintenance, applying cloud-native principles to enhance system resilience and agility. The position requires technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration across teams to drive engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement. The engineer will engage stakeholders to translate complex problems into actionable requirements, ensuring high-quality, maintainable, and secure software aligned with business objectives.
About the team:
The team oversees Store Fulfillment, a key application suite enabling associates to efficiently pick and package groceries for delivery and pickup. They manage engineering and site reliability responsibilities to ensure platform stability, incident response, and continuous enhancement. The team maintains production runbooks, dashboards, and integrates critical alerts with incident management systems. Their mission is to deliver reliable, scalable fulfillment operations supporting Sam’s Club and other Walmart business units. Leveraging expertise in cloud-native architecture, API design, and data-driven decision making, the team drives operational excellence and supports seamless store-related processes across multiple tenants.
What you'll do:
  • Strong backend engineering experience with distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
  • Proficiency in designing, building, and operating scalable, resilient backend services (preferably in Java, Scala, Python, or Go).
  • Experience with distributed data stores (e.g., PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Kafka), messaging systems, and cloud-native infrastructure (Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Familiarity with monitoring, alerting, and observability tools (Splunk, Grafana, OpenObserve, etc.).
  • Strong troubleshooting and incident management skills in large-scale production environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams and time zones.
  • Proactive mindset for identifying and resolving system issues, and driving continuous improvement.

What you'll bring:
  • 10+ years of experience in the design and development of highly scalable distributed applications and platforms.
  • Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture, including microservices, containers, and automation to ensure scalable and resilient systems.
  • Strong experience in software development lifecycle management, encompassing coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in API design, software prototyping, and applying software design patterns for secure, modular, and maintainable solutions.
  • Ability to lead technical design reviews and remedial actions to uphold quality and alignment with architectural standards.
  • Skilled in DevOps engineering practices to enhance infrastructure, tooling, and developer productivity.
  • Data-driven decision-making capabilities to define success metrics and optimize engineering processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership in mentoring engineers and influencing architectural decisions for long-term sustainability.

Bentonville, Arkansas US-09440: The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00
Herndon, Virginia US-10710: The annual salary range for this position is $132,000.00 - $264,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
