Job description
The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school-aged children in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools across New York City. OSH provides NYC Health Code-mandated clinical services, public health initiatives, chronic disease management, reproductive health care, and case management to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn. OSH Physicians also review medical accommodations, respond to public health emergencies, and coordinate with community providers to support the health and safety of students.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Under the supervision of the OSH Assistant Medical Director for High Schools, the CMS II (Supervising Physician - High Schools) will:
- Participate in the development, implementation, and oversight of clinical protocols for adolescent health.
- Supervise High School field physicians and nurse practitioners.
- Support CATCH program, initiatives including providing case consultations.
- Collaborate with PSAL leadership to support the health needs of student athletes.
- Provide direct clinical services to high school students.
- Orient and train OSH staff as needed.
- Coordinate care for Students in Temporary Housing and other high-risk groups.
- Prioritize asthma management initiatives to reduce absenteeism and improve health equity for NYC teens.
- Monitor and respond to adolescent health trends, including chronic disease and substance use.
- Provide health education to students and families.
- Participate in mandated DOHMH and OSH trainings and program meetings.
- Participate in the agency's physician-on-call program
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in adolescent health clinical practice
- Knowledge of current reproductive health and family planning standards of practice
- Experience with clinical and/or administrative supervision of physicians
- Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain good public relations develop rapport students, other clinical providers, school staff and parents
- Professional sensitivity when working with all racial, disability, linguistic and socioeconomic groups; enjoys working with adolescents.
- Knowledge of school health
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software programs
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records

CITY MEDICAL SPECIALIST (PART- - 53040
Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either:
a) Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or
b) Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I described above, one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree; and
c) At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience.
To be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and
c) Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty; and
d) Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
