Job Description
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Arlington County requires all applicants to thoroughly complete each section of the application, including prior job responsibilities, duties, and supplemental questions. The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has multiple temporary vacancies available for Park Maintenance Workers in the Park Service and Landscape area of the Arlington Parks and Natural Resources Division. These employees participate in park maintenance and driving a landscape watering truck within a specified geographic Neighborhood Service Area or at the direction of the area supervisor(s). This position works individually or with a team engaged in refuse collection, basic horticultural functions, street tree watering, park maintenance, and enhancement projects.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include:
  • Using hand and power tools to repair park equipment and perform general ground maintenance;
  • Operating various county vehicles and equipment to include pick-up trucks, water trucks, back pack blowers, string trimmers and other 2-cycle equipment;
  • Cleaning restrooms, picnic pavilions, charcoal grills, recycling and collecting trash; and
  • Collecting refuse and hauling materials.

Qualifications
Minimum:
  • The ability to follow basic written and verbal instructions, learn how to safely operate hand and power tools, and learn a variety of skills related to park maintenance, grounds maintenance, and construction.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Operating backpack leaf blowers, string trimmers, and other 2-cycle equipment;
  • Working with and general knowledge of hand tools;
  • Landscape and/or park maintenance experience;
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License; and/or
  • Ability to read maps using a GPS.

Special Requirements
Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant's driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Working Conditions:
The worker performs activities inside and outside.
The worker is subject to cold (below 32 degrees) for periods of more than one hour and/or temperatures above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as snow, rain, hail, wind and humidity.
The worker is subject to hazards: Including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
The worker is subject to one more of the following conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses or poor ventilation, oils, and other cutting fluids.
Physical Requirements:
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Additional Information
Work Hours: Monday through Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 32 hours per week. Weekend and Holiday hours are required weekly and will be scheduled on an as-needed basis. Weekend and Holiday hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. unless otherwise assigned by supervisor(s).
These are temporary seasonal part-time positions with an expected duration of approximately 6 months. Employees are eligible for sick leave.
The salary range listed above is effective July 1, 2026.
