Job Description:
Location: San Francisco/Hybrid
Department: Structural & Mechanical Engineering
Employment Type: Contractor full-time, convertible to salaried full-time.
Scope & Ownership
Owns the start system: the high-pressure air reservoir and blowdown system, the starter turbine (air-driven expansion/impulse turbine), and the starter power coupling to the rotor. Crossover: turbomachinery↔mechanical systems↔controls.
Minimum Education
● Bachelor"s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
● Master"s or PhD preferred
Experience
● 6-8 years in turbomachinery / turbine, turbo-expander or turbopump design, or a turbomachinery PhD plus ~3 years
● Small-turbine aerodynamic and mechanical design; pressure systems; couplings/clutches
Skill Requirements
● Turbine aerodynamic and mechanical design
● Blowdown and pressure-vessel systems; couplings and engagement mechanisms
● Transient (start) modeling; CFD/FEA; 2D/3D CAD
Responsibilities
● Take sole ownership of hardware development from clean-sheet through high rate production across multiple components of the Parallax PE-10
● Collaborate with other REs to define interface requirements and manage coupled interactions
● Collaborate with Analysts to derive loads, environments, and response characteristics of your hardware across its operating envelope
● Develop and execute test and qualification plans for your hardware
● Analyze test and qualification data to derive margins and iterate on designs
● Collaborate with Production to develop and execute prototype, low rate, and full rate production of your hardware while balancing performance, cost, and complexity
● Flex across multiple disciplines and scopes as necessary
