Job description

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is seeking a casual Oncology Data Specialist for approximately 8 hours per week.
1 year oncology or abstracting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required for this role.
Perform the abstracting functions of the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside facility as well as any other UPMC facility, standalone cancer center, or office location assigned by the Manger, Clinical Registry Information Services. Interact effectively, courteously, and tactfully with physicians and other health care professionals to promote the registry and motivate its use. Perform daily registry operations in accordance with UPMC Network Registry policies and procedures. Abstract and code core clinical data using appropriate classifications systems; analyze medical records according to published guidelines and requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health (if facility is located in Pennsylvania), and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO). Obtain long term follow up data for end results reporting.
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a follow up success rate of at least 90% for cases abstracted in a five-year timeframe, 80% for entire database.
  • Timely and complete abstracting reviewing at the required standard that is dependent on the annual caseload.
  • Maintain minimally, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Department of Health standard, a data quality level of at least 97% for data items reviewed if facility is located in Pennsylvania.
  • Perform other functions and tasks required to maintain a current and accurate database and stay in compliance with the requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health (if facility is located in Pennsylvania), and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO).

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma.
  • Associate's or B.S. degree in Health Information Management preferred.
  • 1 year oncology or abstracting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, abstracting techniques, AJCC and SEER summary staging systems, ICDO, ICD-9-CM, and/or other clinical coding systems.
  • Experience with hospital data systems, Microsoft Office software products and/or personal computers.
  • Accurate and efficient keyboarding skills necessary to meet productivity standards.
  • Prior UPMC cancer registry experiene is preferred.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Oncology Data Specialist certification preferred.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.
