This position resides in the Accelerator Safety Program group in the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division in the Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will become an expert on the Accelerator Safety Order, DOE O 420.2 and accelerator technology and operations. You will interact with engineers and accelerator system operators to understand and evaluate accelerator specific hazards associated with current operations and planned upgrades and modifications, identify and develop controls to mitigate hazards, and interface with the Department of Energy to document and implement the controls necessary to ensure safe operation of the accelerator.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform, document, and maintain technical safety analyses supporting new and existing ORNL accelerator facilities, major accelerator upgrade projects and facility modifications.
- Maintain accelerator safety documentation including Safety Assessment Documents and Accelerator Safety Envelope, revising and updating as needed while ensuring compliance with associated requirements.
- Implement the Unreviewed Safety Issue Process to evaluate proposed facility modifications, new activities or discovered conditions to determine if associated accelerator specific hazards are appropriately addressed by existing safety analyses.
- Provide accelerator facility support as needed and in response to emerging issues to support safe operations and in support of mission needs including minimization of operational downtime due to accelerator safety related issues.
- Coordinate with facility operations staff and local DOE Site Office to assist in the development and implementation of safety bases, analysis of policies, practices and procedures.
- Support accelerator safety related training for System Engineers responsible for safety related Credited Engineered Controls.
- Maintain effective communications and interface with System Engineers responsible for safety related Credited Engineered Controls.
- Provide safety analysis support to researchers and facility management organizations associated with accelerators operated at or below 10 MeV.
- Evaluate modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs.
- Rigorously maintain documentation and records in approved document management system.
