Job description

Position Overview:

The Manufacturing Engineer plays a critical role in the design, optimization, and support of manufacturing processes and products within QED Technologies. This position focuses on improving production efficiency, ensuring product and process quality, supporting new and existing product development, and managing the full product life cycle. The engineer collaborates closely with cross‑functional teams to drive product manufacturing excellence, ensure compliance with industry standards, and support continuous improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Process Design & Improvement

  • Develop, document, and optimize manufacturing processes for QED built products.
  • Identify improvement opportunities using lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Define process parameters, controls, and tooling to ensure consistent production performance.
  • Lead root‑cause analysis and corrective action implementation for process issues.

Product Development & Support

  • Provide design, detail and drafting support to Mechanical, Systems, and Research engineering.
  • Collaborate with cross-discipline product development teams, and Operations to transition new products into production.
  • Create and maintain manufacturing documentation including developing and updating drawings, entering BOM and part maintenance information into the ERP system and coordinate change implementation with internal and external manufacturing teams.
  • Support prototype builds, design-for-manufacturability (DFM) reviews, and engineering change activities.
  • Provide technical guidance to production teams on product specifications and assembly methods.
  • Identify and manage suppliers for sourcing new components and sub-assemblies.

Quality Control & Standards

  • Partner with Quality to establish and maintain process validation, inspection methods, and quality standards.
  • Ensure processes comply with internal procedures and relevant industry regulations.
  • Analyze process data to monitor performance, yield, and quality; implement necessary improvements.
  • Drive continuous improvement related to safety, capability, and robustness of processes and equipment.

Life‑Cycle Management

  • Manage the engineering aspects of product life cycle from introduction through end-of-life.
  • Evaluate component obsolescence, production capacity needs, and design revisions.
  • Support process scaling and equipment upgrades to meet evolving business requirements.
  • Maintain technical documentation and change control throughout the product’s life cycle.


Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing principles, process engineering, and quality systems.
  • Hands-on technical capability in mechanical, optical, and/or electromechanical systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., PTC Creo, SolidWorks) and manufacturing documentation systems (PLM/MRP).
  • Solid foundation in GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects and communicate effectively across teams.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills with experience applying structured methodologies (DMAIC, FMEA).
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, SPC, and process validation techniques.
  • Proficient in writing concise test reports with data driven conclusions and recommendations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities

Reporting, Working Relationships, and Travel

  • Reports to: Manufacturing Engineering Team Lead
  • Works closely with: Engineering teams (Systems, Mechanical, Software, Controls), Operations, Quality, Applications, Service, QED Optics.
  • Travel: Periodic, infrequent travel may be required. Ability to travel, and communicate effectively globally.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum B.S. in Mechanical/Electrical/Optical Engineering or Technology with 3-5 years of work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting complex mechanical, optomechanical, and electromechanical systems.

Preferred:

  • Experience in optics, precision manufacturing, semiconductor, or advanced materials industries.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma or Lean certification.
  • Familiarity with ISO quality standards and regulated manufacturing environments.

Tools

  • CAD tools such as PTC Creo, Solidworks, or equivalent.
  • Manufacturing execution and ERP/MRP systems.
  • Statistical analysis tools (e.g., Minitab, JMP, Excel).
  • Machine tools, metrology equipment, and production instrumentation relevant to QED’s processes.
  • Standard diagnostic and test equipment for mechanical, optomechanical, and electromechanical systems.

Salary Range: $71,000-$113,000. The salary offered will be determined by the candidate's education, experience and other qualifications, taking into account internal equity among current employees with similar skills and experience.
