About the Job
 

The Offal Wildlife Watching Project with University of Minnesota Extension is a research and participatory science project aimed at better understanding the scavenging of deer hunter-provided gut piles (offal) across Minnesota. In this phase of our research, we will identify the occurrence of small mammal scavengers at offal in the coniferous biome of Minnesota, specifically at the University of Minnesota Hubachek Wilderness Research Center near Ely, Minnesota.

Anticipated work period: September 2026, full time in the field at University of Minnesota Hubachek Wilderness Research Center from September 13-27.


Job duties
(20%) Setting up experimental sites and transects (includes placement of experimental gut piles)
(50%) Setting, baiting and checking small mammal traps (Sherman traps) twice per day (morning and evening)
(20%) Handling and processing trapped small mammals: taking biological samples and measurements, in accordance with IACUC protocols; training may be required.
(5%) Deploying and maintaining remote cameras and acoustic recorders
(5%) Accurate and comprehensive data recording and data entry

Qualifications
 

Required 
High school diploma
Completion of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) animal handling training protocols
Ability to traverse uneven terrain in possible extreme weather conditions and for long periods in the field
Attention to detail, accurate record keeping
Preferred 
Small mammal handling experience helpful but not required (training provided)

The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (FWCB) comprises a multidisciplinary group of scholars working on applied and fundamental problems related to the ecology of free-ranging wild animals, management of harvested and invasive species, and documentation and conservation of biodiversity. Our mission is to inspire and create solutions for biological conservation and management in a diverse and changing world.

Pay and Benefits
 

Pay Range: $20.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
