JOB TITLE: Long Term Substitute: Director of Libraries

REPORTS TO: Director of Middle School
FLSA STATUS: Hourly; Non-exempt; January to March
Position Overview:
Hathaway Brown School is seeking a flexible and collaborative long term substitute to provide coverage during the Director of Libraries' maternity leave, anticipated from January through March 2027. The substitute will also support daily operations and provide general classroom, supervisory, and other coverage throughout the School as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide class coverage and instruction for Middle School classes including but not limited to Grade 6 Reading and Writing Workshop and Grade 6 library classes.
- Prepare and deliver engaging lessons that support reading, writing, research, information literacy, and student independence.
- Maintain continuity with established curriculum, assignments, classroom expectations, and assessment practices.
- Create a welcoming, organized, and student-centered Middle School library environment.
- Support routine library operations, including circulation, shelving, displays, collection organization, and basic use of the library management system. Supervise the Upper School Learning commons during non-teaching periods.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required; coursework or experience in education, English/language arts, literacy, or library science preferred.
- Prior teaching, substitute teaching, school library, or related experience, ideally with Middle School students.
- Strong instructional, classroom-management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Comfort supporting reading and writing instruction and helping students develop research and information-literacy skills.
- Ability to learn and use library systems, digital resources, and school technology effectively.
- Flexibility, sound judgment, reliability, and a collaborative approach to changing daily needs.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive community that fosters belonging, curiosity, and a love of reading.
Language Skills: Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking; capable of interpreting documents and communicating effectively with parents and staff.
Reasoning Ability: Skilled in problem-solving, data collection, and drawing valid conclusions.
Physical Demands: Regular activities include standing, walking, sitting, manual tasks, and communication. Frequent reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crawling; occasional climbing or balancing. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally. Reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment: Typically moderate noise levels; accommodations provided as needed.
Compensation & Benefits:
- This is a temporary, 12-week position working throughout the school day. Compensation ranges from $20 to $25 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
