The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work involved in water meter replacement, leak detection, meter reading and customer service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Investigate water customer service complaints.
  • Perform shut-offs and turn-ons for customers moving out or into a location.
  • Shut water off to delinquent accounts that have failed to pay for service.
  • Deal directly with the residents and property owners of the City of St. Charles, on a one on one basis.
  • Perform water leak inspections for residents and property owners of St. Charles City, inside their homes and businesses.
  • Check for underground leaks on customer and city service lines, including city water mains & fire hydrants.
  • Remove defective and old water meters. Install new meters.
  • Replace old and/or defective meter lids.
  • Perform pressure test on customer and city water lines.
  • Test and read residential and commercial water meters.
  • Serve as a meter reader when assigned to cover temporary vacancies in the meter reading crew.
  • Maintain repair and service records.
  • Will be required to carry an on-call pager/cell phone during an assigned 1 week period every three weeks throughout calendar year.
  • Work after hour emergency repairs with distribution personnel.

Minimum Training and Experience Required
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, two (2) years' experience related to customer service, maintenance or repair or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid CDL class A certification, or ability to obtain one within 90 days.
  • Ability to attain a MoDNR DS-1 Certification within 6 months of hire. Retention of certificate is a condition of employment.

Physical Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to perform difficult manual labor for prolonged periods of time under severe weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, sleet, etc. while, either alone or in combination thereof, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, pushing, and pulling; and ability to frequently lift and carry equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds, a minimum distance of 10 feet.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
