What does a temporary laminating machine operator do?

A Temporary Laminating Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining laminating machines used to bond or cover materials such as paper, plastic, or textiles. Their primary duties include loading materials, monitoring machine performance, inspecting finished products for quality, and troubleshooting minor issues. Since the role is temporary, operators may be hired for specific projects or seasonal work. Attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and adherence to safety protocols are important for this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary laminating machine operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Laminating Machine Operator, you need basic mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with laminating machines, safety procedures, and quality control systems is typically required. Reliability, good communication, and the ability to work efficiently in a team are standout soft skills for this position. These abilities ensure safe operation, consistent product quality, and effective workflow in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary laminating machine operators, and how can they be managed effectively?

Temporary Laminating Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as adjusting to different machine settings, maintaining consistent product quality, and meeting tight production deadlines. Adapting quickly to various equipment and following detailed work instructions are essential for success. Effective communication with team members and supervisors helps resolve issues swiftly, while a proactive approach to safety and machine maintenance can prevent production delays. Regular training and asking questions when unsure can also help temporary operators acclimate faster and perform efficiently.

Machine Operator – Laminating, Sheeting & Slitting

Location: Fairfield, NJ 07004

Schedule: Full-time; overtime opportunities available

All Shifts Available

Position Summary

Unifoil is seeking dependable and safety-conscious Machine Operators to operate laminators, sheeters, slitters, and other production equipment at our Fairfield manufacturing facility.

This is a hands-on production position focused primarily on safely operating and monitoring equipment. Operators typically work with assigned helpers who assist with materials and other production tasks, so employees are not expected to operate large production lines alone.

Previous experience operating manufacturing or heavy equipment is helpful, but direct experience with laminators, sheeters, or slitters is not required. Unifoil will provide training for candidates who demonstrate reliability, mechanical awareness, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely start, operate, monitor, and shut down laminators, sheeters, slitters, and related production equipment.

  • Follow work orders, production instructions, and operating procedures.

  • Monitor machine controls and equipment performance throughout each production run.

  • Make basic operating adjustments within established procedures to keep equipment running properly.

  • Work closely with assigned helpers to coordinate material movement and support efficient production.

  • Monitor materials and finished products for visible defects or other quality concerns.

  • Confirm that products meet job requirements and report any discrepancies.

  • Record production quantities, material usage, downtime, and other required information.

  • Watch and listen for unusual machine performance, including abnormal sounds, movement, or operating conditions.

  • Stop equipment when necessary and promptly report mechanical or safety concerns to a supervisor or maintenance employee.

  • Assist with routine equipment cleaning and basic operator-level care.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

  • Follow all machine-guarding, personal protective equipment, and workplace safety requirements.

  • Communicate clearly with helpers, supervisors, quality personnel, maintenance employees, and other machine operators.

  • Support production needs by working overtime when available.

Required Qualifications
  • Comfortable working around and operating large production or industrial equipment.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal work instructions.

  • Strong attention to safety, quality, and detail.

  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.

  • Ability to remain focused while monitoring running equipment.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively as part of a production team.

  • Willingness to learn how to operate laminating, sheeting, and slitting equipment.

  • Willingness to work overtime when available or required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous machine-operating, production, manufacturing, or heavy-equipment experience.

  • Familiarity with laminators, sheeters, slitters, printing equipment, converting equipment, or roll-fed machinery.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to recognize when equipment is not operating normally.

  • Experience working with production work orders, quality checks, or manufacturing documentation.

Training Provided

Unifoil will provide job-specific training on:

  • Laminators, sheeters, slitters, and related production equipment

  • Machine controls and standard operating procedures

  • Safe equipment operation

  • Product and material requirements

  • Basic quality inspections

  • Production documentation

  • Communication and teamwork with assigned machine helpers

Direct experience with Unifoil’s equipment is not required. Candidates with a good work ethic, familiarity with large equipment, and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.

Physical and Work Requirements
  • Ability to work in an active manufacturing environment around large operating equipment.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Ability to regularly bend, reach, and perform material-handling activities.

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.

  • Ability to work around manufacturing noise and moving equipment.

  • Ability to work overtime based on production needs and employee availability.
