Temporary Lab Runner information

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a temporary lab runner, and how do they support the overall lab operations?

A Temporary Lab Runner is primarily responsible for transporting samples, documents, and supplies between different departments or locations within the laboratory. They ensure that materials are delivered on time, which helps maintain efficient workflow and minimizes downtime for lab technicians and researchers. Additionally, they may assist with organizing and stocking inventory, maintaining cleanliness in shared areas, and occasionally supporting basic administrative tasks. This role is essential for keeping the lab running smoothly and allows other staff to focus on specialized tasks.

What is a temporary lab runner?

Temporary Lab Runners are individuals hired on a short-term basis to assist with general tasks in a laboratory setting. Their duties often include transporting samples, stocking supplies, cleaning equipment, and supporting lab staff with basic, non-technical tasks. This role helps ensure the lab operates smoothly and efficiently by allowing researchers and technicians to focus on specialized work. Temporary Lab Runners typically do not require advanced scientific training but must be organized, reliable, and able to follow safety protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary lab runner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Lab Runner, you need attention to detail, basic laboratory knowledge, and at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with lab safety protocols, sample tracking systems, and proper handling of lab materials is typically required. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and effective communication help you excel in this support role. These abilities are crucial to ensure accurate, timely delivery of samples and materials, supporting the smooth operation of laboratory workflows.

Job description

The work we have temps doing is stripped-down parts of our overall process - checking in couriers, unbagging, bar coding, moving samples around the lab ("running"), loading samples into analyzers, adding samples into centrifuges, swirling samples with a liquid chemical, pulling samples from our refrigerated storage area. For onsite visits, the candidates must have their legs fully covered, no skin showing even at the ankles. Profiles we prefer to see: For third shift: Has experience working overnights, ideally recent experience but certainly an understanding of what it takes to acclimate The ideal candidate for us has experience of working in a fast-paced, high-volume work environment. For someone with human lab experience, that means working in a high-volume environment like a LabCorp or Quest. Processors/Accessioners/phlebotomists from those companies or a big high volume hospital work well for us. For someone with Vet Tech or Vet Assisting experience, if they also worked recently at an Amazon or Fed Ex or some other fulfillment position, or perhaps in food service that can be helpful - they can be a great fit, but our production-based work can at times be too fast for them if they are not from a big clinic. For someone with a recent Biology degree, the fast-paced work history will be critical- a research background typically does not work. For someone without lab experience at all: *a willingness to work with and handle blood, urine, fecals and biopsies. *fast-paced work history where they are on their feet and moving - food service, fulfillment, warehouse, production, Amazon / FedEx etc. Education: High School
