Description
General Purpose of the Position
League umpires/referees will officiate youth baseball, basketball, flag football, adult softball, kickball, and basketball league games throughout the year.
Pay is $25-$35 per game, depending on whether there are one or two officials officiating the game.
We are looking for individuals with experience playing, coaching, and umpiring the sport they wish to officiate at any level.
Essential Job Duties
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Officiate and control games, events, and competitions in a confident, appropriate manner.
  • Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed.
  • Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules.
  • Keep track of event start times, and start or stop play as necessary.
  • Make sure the teams have the appropriate equipment and inspect both players and equipment for any issues.
  • Arrive on time for work.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to participants, coaches, and spectators.
  • Assist with game setup and breakdown.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school diploma or equivalent desired
  • One year playing, coaching, or umpiring game desired to officiate at any level desired
  • Ability to crouch, sprint, stand, or jog for extended periods during gameplay.
  • Ability to view violations and infractions accurately during gameplay.
  • Ability to communicate the rules clearly in a non-confrontational manner, and settle disputes among players as well as handle stressful situations that may arise with players, coaches, or parents.
  • Ability to quickly make decisions on infractions and other calls
  • Maintain strong character and unquestionable integrity.

Education and Experience Required
  • Prior job experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Work Environment
Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the duties of this job.
  • For basketball, primarily an indoor work environment
  • For softball, baseball, and flag football, primarily an outdoor work environment
  • Exposure to moderate noise levels.

  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions.
  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of the park in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Exposure to characteristic County Park environments
  • Must have flexibility in schedule to meet the needs of the department
