Job Summary: The custodian is responsible for the repair, maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of the school building and grounds. The custodian regularly inspects the building and grounds with the principal to identify areas in need of repair, maintenance, or additional cleaning. The custodian's goal is to ensure that the school is clean and safe for students, staff, and members of the community. The custodian provides direct support to teachers and building administrators in preparing the facility for classroom activities and campus events. The custodian is also responsible for initiating maintenance requests and maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and materials needed by the custodial team to accomplish assigned tasks. The District is seeking to hire two temporary custodians
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Advises the principal and Director of Buildings and Grounds on matters relating to the maintenance of mechanical equipment and general building and grounds maintenance needs.
  • Prepares the building for daily operations ensuring that the building is operational and hazard free.
  • Secures the buildings and grounds, minimizing the potential for property damage and equipment loss.
  • Cleans assigned facilities and grounds, including, but not limited to hallways, classrooms, offices, gymnasium, restrooms, cafeteria, and multi-purpose rooms, ensuring a clean, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Transports trash, waste, and recycling to the appropriate receptacle.
  • Assures safety during inclement weather by removing snow from walkways and entrances, salting walkways, and providing slip protection on wet floors.
  • Operates and maintains vacuum cleaners, carpet shampoo machines, buffers, and related custodial equipment.
  • Prepares the building for events by setting up tables, chairs, and other equipment as directed.
  • Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns by communicating information to the Director of Buildings and Grounds and the building administration to resolve the issue, and/or take the appropriate action.
  • Assists in accepting and securing deliveries at the school.

Qualifications:
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Three years' experience in custodial and building maintenance work required.
  • Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn schedules, procedures, and the use of tools and equipment used to clean and maintain buildings.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written form.
  • General knowledge of cleaning methods, including knowledge of cleaning supplies and materials, and potential harmful chemical interactions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of custodians and the building administration.
  • Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, and work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain constant, moderate physical effort, including walking, standing, reaching, stooping, climbing, lifting, pushing, and moving furniture, and other equipment.
  • Ability to lift and push up to 50 pounds.

Salary and Benefits:
  • Starting salary of $17.51 per hour.

  • Vacation time is earned based on years of service with the District.
