Job description

As a Staff Physician you will practice mission-focused medicine and provide comprehensive primary and urgent care to individuals in federal custody while working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary federal healthcare system.
Sites may be eligible for additional assignment pay and National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment.
This position is only open to USPHS officers and Call to Active Duty (CAD) candidates.Qualifications:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Requires physical exertion such as repetitively lifting objects greater than 30 pounds for brief periods of time.
  2. Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling.
  3. Must have the ability to assist sick, injured or aging detainees or staff exiting a building (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than oneself).
  4. The work may necessitate some physical characteristics that will be required when responding to an emergency, such as running short distance, prolonged standing and providing medical care within a secure detention facility environment.
Education:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Must satisfy minimum U.S. Public Health Service degree qualifications for a physician.
    a. M.D. from a U.S. or Canadian program accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association (AMA); or
    b. D.O. degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or
    c. Certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates if you are a graduate of a medical school that is not located within a U.S. State or territory or other jurisdiction, or a Province or Territory of Canada
  2. One completed year of postgraduate medical education (e.g., internship or first year of residency training) in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education of the AMA or the Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA.
  3. Current, unrestricted, and valid medical license from any U.S. state, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam
  4. Completion of three years of medical specialty training in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or other primary care specialty leading to board eligibility in that field, with board certification preferred, and at least 1 year of directly related, professional experience performing professional or scientific work in a field of medicine providing direct patient-care services.
  5. Certification of American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, or equivalent, is required.
  6. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration for prescribing controlled substances.
  7. Typing proficiency and experience with electronic heath record documentation.
  8. Flexibility and ability to adapt to sudden changes in schedules and work-related requirements.
  9. High degree of independence, initiative, clinical judgment, and follow-through on a wide range of sensitive, complex, and clinical issues.
  10. Experience in correctional or detention medicine is preferred.
