This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia SC 29203.
As a practicing, duly licensed (registered) pharmacist by the State of South Carolina, actively participate in all phases of practice of professional pharmaceutical care, complying with Federal and State regulations inclusive of the policies and procedures of the OMH, Bryan Psychiatric Hospital (BPH) programs and Morris Village (MV). Demonstrate an understanding, compassion and sensitivity to all age groups and psychiatric populations serves.
Responsibilities for the Temporary Pharmacist:
  • Process all medication orders authorized by a licensed prescriber (M.D.'s, D.O.'s, Nurse Practitioner's, etc.) for the purpose of providing medications to the patients of BPH-Adult, BPH-Child and Adolescent (BPH-C&A). and Morris Village (MV).
  • Provide ongoing drug therapy monitoring of patients served, to include drug therapy evaluations, consultations with other health care professionals, detection of drug interactions and allergies, dose adjustments, adverse drug reaction reporting, and medication event reporting.
  • Must be familiar with, understand, and comply with all policies and procedures affecting the scope of responsibility as compiled in facility policy and procedure directives and the pharmacy department's operational procedure directives. Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacy operations.
  • Participate in and supports pharmaceutical care clinical activities, educational programs, committee functions, quality improvement activities, all mandatory classes, and demonstrate knowledge acquired through these functions. Participate in annual competency training and assessment ensuring that all age-specific groups pharmaceutical care needs are adequately met. Maintain compliance as appropriate with Facility Policies and Procedures and Pharmacy Operational Procedures to include: Cultural and Population-Specific Compliance, Corporate and HIPPA Compliance, Harassment-Free Workplace, and Time and Attendance Policies.
  • Participate in record keeping and inventory management to ensure accurate accountability and supplies of pharmaceutical products, including controlled substances and emergency kits.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and support functions for drug distribution and clinical services of personnel, supportive staff, students, and volunteers.
Additional Requirements:
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Be able to lift/carry/push up to 50 pounds (may be required to kift more during emergencies).
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, pull, push, stoop, bend, and climb at least two (2) to three (3) flights of stairs.
  • Have manual dexterity.
  • Have the ability to provide emergency care (CPR) to patients of cardiac/respiratory arrest and utilize MANDT/MAPS in specific situations as warranted.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in pharmacy or pharmacology or completion of a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

  • Have considerable knowledge of pharmaceutical principles and practices.
  • Have working knowledge of state and federal laws regulating pharmacy and the use of controlled substances.
  • Have skills in compounding drugs and analyzing drug treatment profiles.
  • have the ability to communicate to others the kinds, uses and potential effects of drugs.
