Job description

Interested in joining the Department of Fish and Wildlife's dedicated & diverse team at the Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL)? Learn more about this unique opportunity!
Under general direction of the Supervisor, the position will provide dedicated program support to the WHL game health program(s). Assists with biological sample collection for necropsy, live animals, and disease surveillance of game species; provides samples organization; assists in preparation of biological samples. Enters data for sample archive in WHL databases and laboratory information management system. Assists with game data management, organization, and/or digitization of records. Assists with routine maintenance and/or repairs, cleaning, inventory, restocking, and organization of lab facilities, equipment, and vehicles. Assists with transport of samples, specimens, equipment, carcasses, and live animals. Performs routine tasks in the care and maintenance of live animals (e.g., black bear, beaver) temporarily held at the WHL Animal Pens. Responds to public reports; assists with maintenance of WHL digital and web resources.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.
The language below is required for these NT classifications.
• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Working Conditions
- Use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position for several hours a day in an office setting up to 50% of the time.
- Outdoor field work field activities required, may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions, up to 40% of the time.
- Drive up to 8-hours and travel throughout the State up to 10% of the time.
- Lift up to 40 lbs.
- Attend occasional staff meetings and interact with the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person.

Special Requirements - Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Wear a CDFW uniform, as required.

- Possession of a valid drivers license.
- Receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations and/or maintain current adequate antibody titer within 3 months of hire.
