Job description

Position SummaryThis position performs manual and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of public streets, utilities, buildings, grounds, facilities, and other department assignments to assist with overall department operations.Essential Functions  
  • Assists in the installation and repair of water main valves.
  • Assists in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater service and mainlines.
  • Maintains and repairs water main breaks and leaks, valves, fire hydrants, pressure reducing valves (PRVs), and pump systems.
  • Cleans and repairs sanitary and storm sewers 
  • Assists in televising areas of infiltration, damage, buried manholes, and lines.
  • Collects water samples for contaminants and bacteria testing.
  • Performs general road maintenance and related activities, including flagging traffic, mowing, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, manhole repair, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, sign repair and installation, clearing brush, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash.
  • Performs routine grounds maintenance, including lawn mowing, weed whipping, lawn repair, and hydroseeding. 
  • Clears trees and limbs from roadways, right-of-way, and line of sight.
  • Performs maintenance on storm sewer, including ditching, culvert repair, replacements, and catch basin rebuild and repair.
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
  • Maintains equipment in a clean and operating manner.
  • Reports to work for on-call after-hours needs, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision; take responsibility for quality and timeliness of work; respond to unplanned requests; complete assigned tasks and report progress; demonstrate behavior consistent with Department direction.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.

  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and ability to work flexible hours to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays due to adverse weather conditions, construction projects, or other emergency services.
Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications
  • High School Diploma/equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain a valid State of Tennessee commercial driver’s license with an “N” endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.
