Description
Summary:
The lead researchers of the NRCS funded Climate Smart Agriculture Project "Expanding the Participation of Marginal Producers and Landowners to Promote Climate-Smart Agriculture and Forestry Practices: Continuous Efforts of 1890 Agroforestry Consortium" at Alabama A&M University are seeking a Fulltime, temporary Field Technician position to assist with field operations such as planting trees, preparing land for planting alley crops field layout, and set up an irrigation system for trees and alley crops in the agroforestry demonstration plots at participating farmer's farms. The field technician will assist the PI and co-PIs set up measuring equipment and any other field help as needed.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for setting up demonstration plots and helping the farmers help in laying out the plots.
  • Assist researchers establish CO2 and GHG measurement equipment in field plots.
  • Additional duties may include field vehicle and equipment maintenance and assist graduate student to with data entry.
  • Must be willing to travel to the participating farms independently or along with the researchers.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 3 years of experience in farm operations including tractor driving, plastic culture, and pesticide application.

Supplemental Information
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrate a desire to participate in field operations.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills, be able to follow instructions and manage a field work on farms.
  • Ability to follow instruction and data recording.
  • Have an ability to conduct strenuous physical activity for long hours in agroforestry/agricultural settings sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
  • Enjoy working outside, work well in a team/small group and alone.
