Job description

The Wetlands Unit of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) is seeking qualified candidates to participate in developing and regulating Clean Water Act Section 401 water quality certifications.  Regulatory tasks include the administration of Clean Water Act Section 401 water quality certifications, performing appropriate site reviews, project documentation, and coordination with fellow federal and state agencies, project applicants and consultants.     

Preference will be given to applicants:

1) Possess a degree or significant course work in the areas of biology, chemistry, soil science, or wetland ecology/science. 

2)  possess a wetland professional in training (WPIT) or professional wetland scientist (PWS) certification, or a soil scientist certification. 

3) Experience in environmental field work, focused on water quality monitoring and sampling techniques. 

4) Experience or training in wetland regulatory activities, including CWA Sec. 401 water quality certifications, USACE regulations concerning CWA Sec. 404 permits, wetland delineations, and jurisdictional waters determinations. 

5) Knowledge or experience associated with dredging operations. 

6) Experience in regulatory activities associated with erosion and sedimentation control, including knowledge of the NPDES construction general permits, review of ESPC Plans, buffered state waters, and buffer variance application process. 

7) Experience in regulatory activities associated with FERC licenses, including CWA Sec. 401 water quality certifications and FERC regulations concerning licenses associated with hydroelectric projects. 

8) Experience in drafting and/or reviewing environmental documents (Phase I/II ESAs, Tier I Evaluations, Tier II Sediment Sampling Reports, EAs/FONSIs, EISs, etc.). 

9) Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel, Access, and GIS applications, with emphasis on spreadsheet and data management skills.

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, physics, geology, engineering, or other closely related field from an accredited college or university.
