A student who has a strong interest in video production, marketing and communications, social media management, and creative writing. Bring your skills and learn more on the job as you work closely with the Public Affairs team on a variety of outreach events, communication campaigns, and water use efficiency measures. This candidate will also be excited to don the Rancho Water mascot costume at occasional District events.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under immediate supervision, to perform a variety of duties to provide support of the Public Affairs department and related programs. Position may assist on a variety of projects and programs and provide administrative support where needed.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a temporary entry level position for a college student intern to work no more than 900 hours per fiscal year, or no more than 29 hours a week. Positions assigned to this level perform limited or routine duties, including clerical duties, under close supervision. Because employees in classifications at this level may be in a training capacity, such position does not require significant previous work experience in the applicable field.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES (Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following):
  • Works with public affairs staff and other District departments to create, produce, and edit video and multimedia productions for web, broadcast, and social media
  • Operates a variety of video, audio, and lighting equipment
  • Assists with gathering photos and b-roll for video production
  • Attends and represents the District at community events setting up outreach booths, answering questions, and relaying District information to the public
  • Assists in creating collateral and graphic materials
  • Acts as the District mascot at community and educational events, interacting with event attendees in a friendly and engaging manner, creating a fun and lively atmosphere
  • Assists with logistical coordination of community meetings and events
  • Assists with photography of staff and events
  • Conducts research, gathers information, and drafts content for District events and activities
  • Assists in the development and updating of media lists and other stakeholder databases
  • Assists in coordination of educational programs preparing materials, delivering assets to schools, and organizing supply lists
  • Tracks and updates inventory of promotional items and community event materials
  • Evaluates effectiveness of social media sites, summarizes key indicators, identifies trends, and makes recommendations to increase outreach and participation
  • Maintains social media calendar and assists in creation of social media content
  • Coordinates with other departments on communications and outreach needs
  • Assists with and carries out special projects
  • Assists with day-to-day administrative duties, and other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Graphic design standards with experience in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
  • Video production knowledge with experience editing in Adobe Premiere Pro and Premiere Rush
  • Social media and video platform content creation and posting procedures
  • Copywriting for marketing purposes
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words and rules of composition
  • Proper work safety standards
Ability to:
  • Operate standard office equipment
  • Operate personal computer and iMac including word processing, graphic presentation, graphic design, and desktop publishing programs
  • Present professional image and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and the public
  • Organize and work on simultaneous assignments with attention to schedules and deadlines
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Comply with the District's Safety, Health, and Environmental policies
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS
The essential functions of this position may require the employee to perform the following physical activities:
  • Communicate verbally with District management, co-workers, and the public in face-to-face, one-on-one, and group settings
  • Regularly use a telephone and email for communication
  • Frequently use office equipment such as a personal computer and copier
  • Hearing and vision within normal ranges
  • Normal standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, climbing and bending
  • Lifting (up to 50 lb.) of materials
  • Able to perform in the Wade mascot costume and cooling vest, walking, bending, stooping, and waving for limited periods of time

Experience:General public information and marketing experience, preferred
Theatre or mascot performance experience, preferredEducation/Training:Enrollment at an accredited college, studying in the areas of public relations, marketing, multi-media production, or related field.
